UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.A
FRANCIS F. HEILBORN, OF PLAINVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,428, dated March 17, 1891. u Application i'lled February 20, 1889. Serial No. 300,588. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom zt may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANCIS F. HEILBORN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, anda resident of Plainville, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of bu ttons in which the shoe is hinged to the post; and it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafterfully set forth.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of the button with the arms of the shoe opened to their locking position. Fig. 2 represents the same with the arms of the shoe closed to their proper position for insertion into the buttonhole. Fig. 3 represents an under side View ofthe button with the shoe in the position Fig. 4 represents a section taken in the line @c a: of Fig. 3, with the shoe closed. as in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a section taken in the line y y of Fig. 3, with the shoe closed, as in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 shows the form of the sheet-metal blanks for making the shoe.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the head of the button; B, the hollow post, which is made in rectangular form and attached to the head Aat the sides a a, and provided with an opening b at the sides c c to receive the flat spring d, the said spring being arranged to act against the sliding piece e, which rests upon the spring and looselyts the hollow of the post B and is provided at its upper end with a flat bearing-tace, which serves to hold the two loop-arms O and C of the shoe in' their proper set position. The loop-arms C and C are each first ont from sheet metal in the form shown in Fig. 6, and are then bent to the form shown in Fig. 3, the loop C being made small enough to pass Within the loop C', as shown in Fig. 4. The arms C and C are each provided with angular en dsf, through the perforations g in which the pivot h is made to pass, and the fiat bearing-face ot the sliding piece e, which will be pressed by the flat spring d iirmly against the straight edges 1I t' andy' of the loops, according to the position in which they are placed, Will serve to hold them properly7 in position.
I claim as my invention- In a button', the combination, withthe head A and the attached hollow post B, provided with the openings b (Lof the spring CZ, sliding piece e, and the unequal loops C C', pivoted to the post B, one Within the other, and provided with the angularends f, adapted to bear against the end of the piece e, substantially as described.
FRANCIS F. HEILBORN.
