No. 828,850. PATENTED AUG. 14, 1906. W. TISOH.
BOX LID HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 16, 1903.
[NVENTGR WILLIAM TISCH, OF LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN.
BOX-LID HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 14, 1906.
Application filed December 16. 1903. Serial No. 185,378.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Trson, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cigar-b ox-lid holders adapted for sustaining the lid of the cigarbox in an open position to display the contents of the box and the label or trade-mark on the under side of the cover thereof.
The object of the present invention is to provide -a simple, inexpensive, and improved article of manufacture of the kind named and for the purposes stated whereby a substantial support for the lid is provided, so that the hinge thereof will be relieved of strain and the lid held in the most desirable position for exhibiting the label and the goods.
For a full understanding of the merits and advanta es of my invention reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ci arbox with my improved lid-holder app ied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the lid or cover open. Fi 3 is an end elevation of the box, showing alid which has been entirely removed from the box supported by my improved lid-holder. Fi 4 is a detail sectional view showing the boxook engaged over the end piece of a box and the diagonally-arranged arm as placed to support the raised lid. Figs. 5 and 6 areend and front elevations of the device, respectively.
Making renewed reference to the drawings, wherein similar reference-notations indicate corresponding parts appearing in the several illustrations, 1 desi nates a cigar-box having the usual hinged id or cover 2, which is shown held in an open position in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 b my improved lid-holder 3. I
The id-holder 3 is formed from a sin le piece of wire of sufiicient rigidity to meet t e purposes for which it is intended, and the several bends formed therein are of such dimension as to properly engage with and be substantially supported upon a cigar-box of the usual size. The wire or rod of which the lid-holder is constructed is formed at its lower end with a hook 8, formed with a vertically-depending shank and adapted to engage over the end piece of the box. From the lower end of the shank of hook 8 the wire is directed outward and horizontal to the hook-shank, as at 7. Thence the wire is bent inward and horizontally at right angles to the part 7 to rest against the face of the side of the box, as at 6, and thence from the inner end of the part 6 is directed upward at right angles thereto, as at 5, and diagonally or inclined outward from the box to constitute the supporting element for the box-lid, and from the upper end of the element or part 5 the wire is bent down to horizontal position, as at 4, and formed into a hook adapted to en age over the end of the box-lid, substantia ly as shown in the drawings.
From the description thus far given it will be seen that when the lid-holder is applied to the box to support the lid the lower hook 8 is in a true vertical v osition and fits snug into the corner of the ox, so that the bill of the hook will not engage with or tear the ci ars contained in the box. The tapering end 0 the cigar provides a space in the corner of the box, and the hook occupies this space and cannot be displaced therefrom by reason of the rightangular bearing around the corner of the box, which bearing is formed by the bends 6 and 7, and an outward movement away from the end wall of the box is prevented by reason of the bill of the lower hook, which is in substantially the same vertical plane with the crown portion of the upper hook 4, since the latter terminates short of the end of the box, as hereinbefore set forth.
It will also be seen that the several bends formed in the lid-holder are of such dimensions as to provide a snug and tight fit with the several surfaces engaged thereby, whereby a firm bearin is provided and the liability of the bill of the lower hook 8 defacing the cigars is obviated, as that element cannot possibly work away from the corner of the By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that a lid which has been entirely severed from the box may also be firmly supported by my improved holder, and in this adaptation and use it is preferable to employ a lid-holder at each end of the box, although one may suffice to properly support the lid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A box-lid holder made of a single piece of wire formed with a hook 8 at one end having a vertical depending shank and adapted to engage over the upper edge of the end of the IIO . boX, a part 7 directed horizontally at right diagonal part and formed With a hook to en- 10 gage over the end of the box-lid.
in testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
