Description

(No Model.) I w H. H. HOWARD.
BOX- I No. 505,000. I Patented 000. 3,1803.
lrrn STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
HENRY H. HOWVARD, OF EAST ORANGE, NEWJERSEY.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,900, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed June 17, 1893.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY H. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey,'nave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In stores in which some articles of cutlery, such as pocket knives, &c., are retailed, it is customary to use small boxes in which the difierent varieties of goods are kept in show cases, 850., these boxes usually having recessed lids, or lids formed as trays, to hold and display a sample article of the stock in the box; the sides of the tray-like lids preventing the displayed samples placed loosely therein from being accidentally pushed aside or otherwise becoming displaced from the boxes to which they belong. These tray-lid boxes are placed in show cases or on shelves close together side by side and end to end, and as the lids are of a considerable depth or thickness and as the boxes are of equal heights it is impossible to conveniently open a box, with the lid as heretofore constructed, to get at the stock therein, without lifting the box above the surrounding ones or pushing the others out of position, as the back part of the lid, when the latter is attempted to be raised, impinges against the contiguous box and thus prevents the lid from rising unless the box be moved as above stated. Moreover in thus attempting to lift the lids of these boxes as heretofore made the hinges of the lids, (which hinges are generally of muslin or other thin cloth) are frequently strained and sometimes broken, thereby damaging the boxes.
My invention has for its object to obviate this difficulty, as well as to provide a strong hinge for the lid, and this object I accomplish preferably by making one side or end of the box higher than the body thereof, and by forming the hinge connection between the lid and the box from two pieces of cloth or other similarflexible material which are attached to the opposite sides of the upwardly projecting part referred to in such a way as to locate the hinge part at the upper inside corner of the said projecting part or projection. Thus when the lid is lifted it will swing from Serial No. 477,957. (No model.)
a hinge point which is within the vertical plane of the exterior of the box, instead of from the upper outside corner of the box, as heretofore, so that the lid can be fully lifted without interfering with the contiguous box.
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical section of my improved box, and in said drawing A denotes the box and b the lid thereof, said lid being in the form of a shallow tray in that it has sides and ends extending about half an inch, more or less, above the bottom of the tray, or lid proper, to form a recess or receptacle for the sample which represents the stock contained in the box. The side or end of the box to which thesaid lid is hinged is extended upward above the body of the box forming the projection on and the hinge of the lid is formed of two strips 0, d, of cloth or other thin flexible material, the said strips being pasted or glued to the opposite sides of the said projection a and also to the opposite sides of the hinge end 6 of the tray-lid, thus forming a strong hinge the hinge-pointy of which is at the upper inside corner of said projection so that when the lid is lifted, as denoted in dotted lines, it swings entirely within the vertical plane of the box and thus does not interfere with the contiguous box. The outer hinge strip 0 is preferably merely a continuation of the piece of cloth which forms the ornamental finish on the outside of the end g of the box and is continued over to finish the outside of the end e of the tray-lid and the inner hinge strip (1 is preferably of sufficient length to partly finish the inside of the said lid and the end g of the box. The finish of the lid is, in practice, completed by the outside label h and the inside label 1', and the sides and ends of the box and lid are preferably finished with cloth corresponding in appearance to the material of the strips 0 and d.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A box having a side or end portiou, as a, projecting above the body of the box, combined with a tray-like lid hinged to the inside upper corner of said projecting portion or projection, the hinge connection between said lid and said projection being formed of two strips of thin flexible material attached to the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in opposite sides of said projection and also to presence of two Witnesses.
the opposite sides of the hin e-end of the r said tray lid, thus forming a stFong hinge the IIENRX 5 hinge-point of which is Within the vertical \Vitnesses:
plane of the exterior of the box, substantially SAMUEL R. BELL,
as and for the purpose set forth. I H. P. DAVISON.
