JULIUS c. EHLERMANN, or BARNESVILLE, onto, ASSIG-NOR' TO THE noisy GIG-AR COMPANY, or BABNESVILL-E, OI-IIO', Ao'oRronA'rIoN or OHIO,
METAL CIGAR BOX.
Application filed October 16, 1922. Serial No. 594,687.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS C. EHLER- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barnesville, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Cigar Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is directed to improvements in metal cigar boxes.
The invention has for its primary object to provide a box of this character so constructed that the hinged lid thereof can be supported in its open position to display the contents of the box.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of support which is in the nature of a tongue, and forms a permanent part of the box, said tongue being capable of being easily moved from its inoperative position to its operative position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a support of this character which is normally arranged in such a position as to in no way interfere with the packing of the box for shipping, but can be quickly manipulated to hold the lid in its open position to permit inspection of the contents of the box.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts, and hereinafter to be fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the box, partly in section, and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary rear view of the box equipped with the support.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates a metal box of suitable shape for holding a quantity of cigars, said box having a top 2, the top is provided with a peripheral flange 3, said flange being hingedly connected to the rear wall of the box 1 as at 4.
In order to provide an integral and permanent support for the top the rear wall of the box is provided with a tongue 5, said tongue being formed in the box wall in any approved manner, such for instance as with a die which will clearly cut the rear wall to provide the tongue. This tongue is normally confined in a plane with the box wall and in no way detracts from the appearance of the box. The tongue is directed downwardly and can be easily forced outwardly and upwardly to the desired angle with respect to the box wall, and when in the position as shown in Figure 1 the top when open will have the rear portion of its'fiange rest on said tongue, thereby supporting the top in a position as shown, and permitting the contents of the box to be inspected. Since the tongue is a permanent part of the box the likelihood of the same becoming lost or misplaced is eliminated, and it will be further observed that by this construction the support is always ready for use.
This type of box is usually displayed upon counters and the storekeeper often desires to close the boxes at night to protect the contents from dust, and heretofore detachable devices have been employed, but they require removal and replacement as the boxes are opened or closed and often become lost, whereas in the present invention the tongue after once being bent outwardly is always ready for use.
It will be of course understood that the wholesalers ship the box with the tongue in its inoperative position and the retailer places it-in its operative position when the box is opened to sell the contents.
While the device has been described particularly for containing cigars, however, it will be of course understood that the structure can be used in connection with boxes for containing other commodities.
What is claimed is:
1. A box of the class described, a top hingedly connected thereto, and avnormally depending tongue forming an integral part of the box and capable of being bent outwardly to support the top in an open position.
2. A box of. the class described, a top hingedly connected thereto, a normally depending tongue carried by the rear wall of the box and adapted tobe forced upwardly and outwardldv to a position to be engaged by the top a jacent its hinged connection to support said top in an open position.
3. A box of the class described, a top hingedly connected thereto, a tongue in tegrally connected to the wall of the box and normally positioned in a plane With the wall, said tongue being adapted to be bent upwardly and outwardly, said tongue being pliable to permit the same to assume selected angular relation with the box Wall to sup- 10 port the top in diilerent open positions of angularity. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JULIUS G. EHLERMANN.
