No. eaoes.
Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed November 17, 1905i Serial No. 287|804.
To a/ZZ whom t may coi/accru: l
Be it known that I WILSON S. GILLELAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newkirk, in the county of Kay and Territory of Oklahoma, have made certain new and useful Im rovements in Grain-Doors, of which the fo lowing isA aspecilication.
My invention is an improvement in raindoors; andit consists in certain nove constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part of a car provided with my improved grain-door, a portion of the door being broken away to show the door upon the opposite side of the car. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section on they line 8 3 ofthe same gure. Y
The car A illustrated is of the box ty e and is provided with a door-opening a in t e side thereof, the floor of the car being provided with a sill a2, extending between theposts a', forming the sides of the openings.
Leaves B are connected by means of hinges b with plates t, secured to the inner faces of the posts by means of lag-screws b2 or any other suitable means. By referring to Figs.
1 and 2 it will be seen that the hinges l) are arranged in such manner that the leaves o en inward with respect to the car and the p ater b is spaced from the edge of the posts, thus allowing the leaves to abut against the posts when in alinement with the plate. This arrangement relieves the strain upon the hinges during the outward moti on of the door proper. Doors OO', provided withfan-shaped openings c, are hinged to the leaves by means of the hinges c, the hinges being arranged in v such manner that the doors will open outward with respect to the car or in an op osite direction to the opening of the leaf. ne of the doors, O in the present instance,`is -provided with a plate cx, arranged upon the inner face and projecting` beyond the edge thereof to receive the door O for preventing inward movement of the latterrdoor with respect to the former.
Plates D substantially triangular in outline, are provided for closing the opening c', the plates being pivoted to thedoors by a pivotpin d. The plates are provided with handles d for convenience in manipulating the same ward motion of the plates wit respect to the `doors being restrained by means of keepers d2, secured to the doors and the free ends of the plates.
poivoted to the door C by means of the pin c Fig. 2, comprising a ment to the door an engaging the ilanges.
The rocking levers h are three in number in the present instance, and the outer'arms of ortion 708 for attacha hook portion h for h5 pivoted thereto. Ahandle h2, integral with the outer arm of the uppermost rocking lever, is provided for manipulating the bar, a pin h3, connected to the handle by means of a chain h6, being provided for securing the handle when the doors arefastened, the pin traversing alined openings in the vhandle and the door. A lug k7, integral with the lowermost rocking' lever, is provided for engaging a groove a3 in thedoor-sill when the doors are` fastened. The engagement of the lug with the groove prevents movement`of the doors with respect to the sill.
When the car is tobe loaded, the doors are vclosed and' are securedby manipulating the handle h2 tovengage the rocking levers with the catches. The same movement engages the lug with the groove, thus securing the doors in their closed position. The plates E of their own weight rest against the door-sill, closing the crack between the door and the sill. When a car is to be unloaded, the fastening device is released and the doors are permitted to swing outwardly on their connection with the leaves. When the car is not in use, the doors maybe swung inwardly against the inside of the car on the hinges b.
Having thus described my invention, what and when closed rest upon a in da, the out= Plates E, ofl a length equal to the width of u on one of the arms of the rocking lever h' The catches h are of the shape shown 1n projecting over I each of themA are connected together by a bar i IOO ends of said levers whereby to constrain them to move in unison, an d one of said levers being provided with an integral lug for directly engaging the sill when the llfmges are engaged with the catches, whereby to prevent movement of the doors with respect to the sill.
VILSON S. GILLELAND.
