UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN W. NELSON, OF KENT, MINNESOTA.
GRAIN-DOOR FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,992, dated February 9, 1904.
Application filed May 19, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN W. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kent, in the county of Wilkin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grain-Doors for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car-doors; and the object of the same is to construct an eficient locking device therefor.
The simple and novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my door closed and locked. Fig. 2 is a likeview of the same closed and unlocked. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the locking mechanism.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates the side of a car for transporting grain and having an opening 2 therein, about the lower two-thirds of which are closed by the door, comprising two sections or parts 3 and 4, mounted-on vertical axis to swing in both directions, either inwardly or outwardly, and overlapping each other when closed. A sliding bolt 5, mounted on the doorsection 3, engages an aperture 6 in the sill 7 and secures the door in a closed position. Two keepers 8 are rigidly secured to the door-section 4 in alinement with two keepers 9, rigidly attached to the door-section 3 to accommodate two slidingly-mounted locking-bolts 10. To operate the bolts 10, a T-shaped lever 11 is provided, having a stem 12 and arms 13, which have right-angled or rebent end portions or terminals 14, which extend parallel to and in the same direction as the stern 12 to form leverarms, which are coupled by connecting-rods Serial No. 157,871. (No model.) I
15 to the sliding bolts 10. The arms 13 are mounted in keepers secured to the doors 3 and serve as fulcrums for the lever 11. Bolts 16 are located inside of the car for use in securing the doors 3 and 4 back and open.
Suppose the doors 3 and 4 to be swung back and secured by bolts 16, in order to close the doors the bolts 16 must be raised to release the doors 3 and 4, which can be swung around to overlap and the door 3 secured by the bolt 5. The stem 12 of the T-lever 11 is then swung forward to operate the sliding bolts 10 and force them into the keepers 8." The lever 11 will be fiat against the doors 3 and 4 when in its locked or unlocked position and be out of the way and positively locked.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention. 7
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I The combination, with a sectional or twopart car-door, of duplicate series of keepers, arranged upon the car-door sections, respectively, sliding bolts arranged or housed in one of said series of keepers and, in their projected position, adapted to engage the other of said series of keepers, a T-shaped lever having its cross-head fulcrumed upon one of said door-sections, said cross-head having rightangled or rebent terminals extending parallel with the stem or handle of said lever, and links connecting together said bolts and said terminals.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARTIN W. NELSON.
