CAR-DOOR LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1913.
Application filed April 12, 1912. Serial No. 690,403.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD M. GETMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Larchwood, in the county of Lyon and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved grain car door, or inner door, and consist-s in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for locking the slidably mounted door members of a grain car in closed position.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a grain car provided with a door and supporting and securing devices constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion of the outer wall of the car being shown removed to disclose interior constructions and the members of the door being shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the door members, in full lines, partly opened and fully opened in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical sectional view on the plane indicated by the line b?) of Fig. 1.
For the purposes of this specification, a pair of door members are shown at 1-2. The door member 1 is shown as provided with a flange bar 20 which projects from its outer side and which is indicated by the numeral 2 when the door members are in closed position, the said flange bar being at the inner side of the member 1. The doors are slidable toward and from each other.
On the outer side of the door member 2 is a vertically arranged and movable bolt rod 21 which operates in guides 22. The lower end of this bolt rod is adapted to engage a recess 23 in the car floor. A locking yoke bar 24 is pivotally connected as at 25 to the upper end of the bolt rod and has on its under side near its ends, locking notches 26 which may be engaged with headed locking studs 27 that project from the outer sides of the door members. This bolt rod is pivotally connected as at 28 to a lever 29 which is fulcrumed as at 30 to the door member 2 and has a circular inner portion the upper edge of which is provided with looking ratchet teeth 31. A locking pawl 32 is pivotally mounted on the door member 2 and may be engaged with the toothed portion of the lever 29 to lock the latter in closed posi tion so as to retain the bolt rod with its lower end in engagement with the recess 23 and with the bar 24 engaged with the locking studs 27. After having disengaged the locking pawl from the lever 29, the latter may be turned upwardly so as to raise the bolt rod 21 and cause the latter to disengage the locking recess 23 and elevate the bar 24 so as to cause the said bar 24 to be disengaged from the locking studs 27. When in disengaged position, the bar 22 swings by gravity to a vertical position on the door member 2, out of the way, as shown in Fig. 2.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, construction and proportion of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
claim 1. A car or the like structure having a door opening and a locking recess at the lower side of the opening, a pair of slidably mounted door members movable toward and from each other in the door opening, a vertically movable bolt rod carried by one of the door members and adapted at its lower end to engage the said locking recess, a looking bar pivotally connected to the said bolt rod for vertical movement therewith and also for pivotal movement thereon, the said bar and door members having coengaging devices adapting said bar to lock the door members together when the bolt rod is in lowered position.
2. A car or the like structure having a door opening and a locking recess at the lower side of the opening, a pair of slidably mounted door members movable toward and from each other in the door opening, a vertically movable bolt rod carried by one of the door members and adapted at its lower end to engage the said locking recess, a looking bar pivotally connected to the said bolt rod for vertical movement therewith and also for pivotal movement thereon, the said bar and door members having coengaging devices adapting said bar to lock the door members together when the bolt rod is in lowered position, and a lever to operate the said bolt rod.
1 3. A car or the like structure having a door opening and a locking recess at the lower side of the opening, a pair of slidably mounted door members movable toward and from each other in the door opening, a vertically movable bolt carried by one of the door members and adapted at its lower end to engage the said locking recess, a locking bar pivotally connected to the said bolt rod for vertical movement therewith and also for pivotal movement thereon, the said bar and door members having coengaging devices adapting said bar to lock the door members together when the bolt rod is in lowered position, a lever to operate the said bolt rod, and a locking dog or pawl for the lever, the latter having a locking tooth for engagement by said pawl.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
