CAR-DOOR LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1914.
Patented Oct. 13, 1914.
serial No. 827,053.
To all whom- 'i my concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN KAnTnniseR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Aurora, county of Kane, and
' State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Car Door Locks, of which the following is a specification. y
My invention relates to locks for car doors and the object of this improvement is to provide a simple and effective locking means of the character mentioned adapted to lock a plurality of doors and provide means whereby all of said door locks may be sealed with one seal.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
'ith these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which the figure is a fragmentary side elevation of a ear equipped with locking means embodying my invention.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a car 1 Ahaving a side door 2 mounted in a suitable opening in any conventional or preferred manner. At one vertical edge of door 2l are provided locking bolts 3, one adapted to engage a suitable catch at the top of the door and the other adapted to engage a suitable catch at the bottom of the door.` The remote ends of said bolts 3 are slidably mounted in bearingmembers 4 and the adjacent ends thereof are pivoted to ears5 on a lever 6, the arrangement being such that upon moving lever 6 from a horizontal to an inclined or vertical position the bolts 3 will be withdrawn to unlock the door.
At the upper side of door 2 is a sliding door 7 mounted to slide in vertical guides 8. The door 7 is supported in closed position by means of a locking catch 9, the latter being hinged to door 7, as at 10, and having its lower end provided With a perforation engaging a staple 11 secured in door 2. Below the staple 11 in door 2 is asecond staple K12, the latter forming a guide for a locking bolt 13 which is adapted to be inserted in staple 11,to lockthe latch 9. The lower end of locking bolt 13 dis pivoted, 'as at 14 to lever 15, the latter being pivoted as at 16,
a hasp 17.
At one end of lever 15 is hinged The hasp 17 is provided with a perforation adapted to engage a 'loop 18 carried on the end of lever 6 so that when levers 6 and 15 are in horizontal positions the hasp 17 may be engaged by loop 18 to effect locking of said levers in such positions. A keeper 19 is pivoted on hasp 17 and adapted to engage loop 18 to lock hasp 17 to lever 6 as willbe readily understood.
At the lower side of door 2is pivoteda door 20 on hinges 21 for vertical swinging. Near the upper corners of door'20 are .pivoted latches 22. The lower ends of said latches are connected together by means of a connecting link 23 in order to cause the same to be moved in unison. One of the latches 22 is provided with a perforated ear 24 adapted to be engaged by a locking'bolt 25 which is pivoted as at 26 to lever 15 so that upon' swinging lever 15 out of horizontal position the locking bolt 25 will be disengaged from ear 21 in order to permit swinging of latches 22. The lower ends of latches 22 are adapted to engage catches 27. The catches 27 are preferably strips having portions bent up forming spaces under their central portions adapted to receivethelower ends of latches 22. The catches 27 are disposed in inclined or angular positions with respect to the lower edge of door 20 so that upon swinging the latches 22 the same will pzss from under catches 27 at their uppe s1 es.
From the arrangement set forth,.it will be observed that upon unlocking the hasp 17 to door from staple 18 levers 6 and 15 are free toI be moved on their pivotal points to unlock the catches of the doors, the doors each of the doors are closed and lever 6 moved to engage locking bolts 3 with their respective catches to lock door 2. Door 7 is maintained in its closed-position by placing the latch 9gover staple 11 and door 20 is locked by moving latches 22 under catches 27. Lever 15 is moved on its pivotal point to slide locking boltsV 13 and 25 to lock said doors 20 and 7. Uponplacino the hasp over loopv 18 a seal may be p aced through loop 18 to seal all of the locks of said doors.
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction 'for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departln order to lock Li-hasp locking said levers ing from the spirit of the invention. I, ing `the latter against relative movement,
therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention whatA I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a car having a side door and auxiliary doors in said side door, of locks for said auxiliary doors; locks for said side door; a lever connected with the locks of said auxiliary doors; a lever connected with the locks of said side door; means connecting said levers; and a seal sealing said means, scribed.
2. The combination with a car having a side door and auxiliary doors in said side door, of catches for each of said doors; locking bolts coperating with said catches; two levers Jivote'd on said side door, said locking bolts eing pivoted tc said lever; and a againstJ movement, substantially as described. The combination with a car having a side dpor and auxiliary doors in said side door, of locks :tor said side doors; locks for said auxiliary doors; an actuating lever conne'cted with the locks of said si e door; an actuating lever connected with the locks of said auxiliary doors, corresponding ends of said levers, when the locks cooperating therewith are in locking position, being in .registration with each other; and means engagging with said ends of said levers for locksubstantially as de- A substantially as described.
4. The combination with a car having a side door and auxiliary doors in said side door, of locks for said side door; locks for said auxiliary doors; a substantially hori- Zontally disposed actuating lever connected with the locks of said auxiliary doors, corresponding ends of said levers, when the locks cooperating therewith are in locking position, being in registration with each other; and means engaging with said ends of said levers for locking the latter against relative movement, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a car havinga side' door and auxiliary doors in said side door, of locks for said side doors; locks for said auxiliary doors; an actuating lever connected with the locks of said auxiliary doors, corresponding` ends of said levers, when the locks coperating therewith are in'l locked position, being in registration With each other; means engaging with said ends of said levers for locking the latter against relative movement, said means comprising a staple on one of said lever ends adapted to engage a slot provided in the other lever end; and a hasp on said last mentioned lever l end adapted for engagement With said last mentioned staple, substantially as described.v lIn testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tivo subscribing Witnesses.
