To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CI-IARLEs WV. VOELPEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottle-stoppers The objects of the invention are to improve the construction of such devices and to render the same air-tight.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described apd claimed as a practical embodiment there- 0 In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a bottle having a stopper constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the improved stopper. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof.
Like reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
The reference-numeral 1 indicates a bottle or jar which may be of any suitable form and construction.
The improved stopper of the present invention includes in its construction a body portion 2, which is formed, preferably, of cork or other suitable material of a similar nature Resting against the bottom of the body portion 2 is a disk 3, of rubber or other suitable liquid-proof material. The disk 3 preferably is of a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the body portion 2, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. A circular plate 5, of metal, rests against the upper surface of the body portion 2. Extending through the plate 5, body portion 2, disk 3, and plate 4, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, is a connecting member 6, which consists of a strip of metal bent upon itself to form two strands. The lower ends or terminal portions of the connecting member 6 after passing through the plate 4 are spread or bent in opposite directions, so as to hold the plate 4 and disk 3 securely against the lower surface of the body portion 2. The upper portion of the connecting member 6 is bent in such manner as to form an eye through which 6X- tends a ring 7, which is adapted to be used in withdrawing the improved. stopper from a bottle or jar.
By reason of the fact that the disk 3 is larger in diameter than the body portion 2 the improved stopper is adapted to close a bottle or jar in a perfectly air and liquid tight manner.
Whenever the disk 3, of rubber, rots or wears out, the terminals of connecting member 6 are bent toward each other, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, so as to permit the plate 4 and disk 3 to be removed, after which a new disk of rubber can be applied to the body portion 2 and held in position by replacing the plate 4 and spreading the terminals of the connecting member 6. By reason of the fact that the disk 3 can be removed and replaced by a new disk whenever desired the life of the stopper is materially prolonged.
In its precise combination and arrangement of parts and in its exact details of construction the bottle-stopper of this invention constitutes an improvement over prior devices of a similar character.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-- A bottle-stopper comprising a body portion, an air-tight disk applied to the lower end of said body portion, said. disk being larger in diameter than the body portion, a plate resting against the disk, a plate resting against the body portion, a connecting member extending through the two plates and through the body portion and disk, said connecting member comprising a strip of metal bent upon itself and having an eye at its up per portion, the terminals of said connecting member being adapted to be bent toward. or from each other so as to render the plate which rests against the disk removable, and a ring engaging the eye of the connecting member.
