CLOSURE FOR JARS AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SELBY C- CARR, citizen of the United States, residing at Muskogee, in the county of Muskogee and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Jarsand the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates-to clamps for holding the closures of jars, bottles, crocks, and the like, in place, and aims primarily to provide a clamp for the purpose stated which will firmly hold the closure in place regardless of temperature changes to which the contents of the container may be subjected.
The invention ainis further to provide a clamp of the character mentioned, the parts of which may bereadily disassembled, .so that should one or the other of the parts become broken or worn, the entire clamp will not be rendered useless.
A further feature of the invention resides in the construction of'th closure itself, it being particularly well adapted for use in connection with the clamp of the invention.

The container in the accompanying drawin'gs, is indicated by the numeral 1, and has a. mouth 2 which is formed exteriorly with a shoulder 3. The closure for the container, when the container is in theform of'a jar. is preferably of glass, although any desired material may be used, and is conca voconvex and disposed upon the mouth of the container-with its convex side'outermost. This closure is indicated in the drawings by the numeral 4 and is' formed with a channel 5 which is presented downwardly and out wardly and is continuous. Theedge of the mouth of the container is formed with an upwardly and inwardly ,presentedb'e-vel 6 which, when the closure is in proper position upon the container, is presented downwardly toward the channel 5, the channel being V-shaped and the bevel forming the base of a triangle of which it and the walls of the channel are sides. An elastic packing ring 7 circular in cross-section, is fitted in the channel 5 prior to clamping the closure on the mouth of the container, and when the closure is clamped in place, this ring will be compressed and will conform to the walls of the channel and the bevel of the mouth of the container. It will be observed that the depending flange of the closure which constitutes one wall of the channel 5, is of a diameter slightly-less than the internal diameter of the container mouth, so that when the closure is in place this flange will project a short distance into the mouth of the container.
The clamp for holding the closure in place upon the container includes a band 8 which is of resilient sheet metal and, adjacentits ends, is bowed as at 9 to form downwardly projecting arms 10 having a normal tendencv to spring inwardly toward each other and provided at their extremities with hooks 11 arranged to engage with the shoulder 3 of the container at diametrically opposite points. The intermediate portion of the band 8 is bowed upwardly to form a loop 12 and the band, at the ends of the loop. rests upon the upper face of the closure 4 when the band 8 is in proper position upon the container and its closure and the bowed portions 9 extend over the edge of the closure .aud the edge of the mouth of the container in spaced relation with respect thereto, and as a consequence, should the contents of the container be subjected to abnormally high temperature. the expansion of the closure will be permitted, although the closure will be so firmly heldin place as to prevent the leakage of the said contents. In other words, the bowed portions 9 of the band allow the band to exert its full resilient clamping action on the closure. The clampalso includes a finger-lever. which is indicated by the numeral 13 and is formed with a head 14 having a laterally projecting semi-cylindrical cam-portion 15. This portion 15 has its rounded face presented in the direction of projection of the finger-lever and its said rounded face, at the .end of said portion, is beveled as indicated by the numeral 16 to permit of the ready insertion of said por-- 'tion into the loop 12 and between the same and the upper face of the closure. At this point it will be readily understood that the fihger-lever clamp is bodily removable from the band 8 and that the band is to be first disposed upon the container and closure and the cam-portion of the finger-lever then inserted in the loop in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, its fiat face, atsuch time, resting upon the upper face of the .closure. Having thus described the invention what claimed as new is: l. A clamp of the'class described comprising a band formed at its'ends to engage with a container, and a cam'head having a fiat and a rounded side and having a finger lever projecting from its rounded side at one end thereof only, the'said-head being otherwise free from projections, the head being adapted to be removably inserted beneath the said band.
2. The combination with a container and a closure therefor, the said closure having a convex upper side, of means for clamplng the closure upon colnprisin a band arranged at its ends to engage with 'the container and having its portions adjacent its ends positioned upwardly and outwardly in spaced relation to the edge of the closure and the edge of the mouth of the container, the intermediate portion of the band being formed with an upwardly presented semi-circular loop resting at its ends upon the convex side of the closure, a11d-a finger lever having a laterally projecting semi-cylindrical cam portion removably inserted within the loops In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
