Letters Patent No. 82,010, dated September 3, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN JUG-TOPS.
feo
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, PETER LAUsTER,-.of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jug-Tops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a. vertical longitudinal section through the lid and body, with knob andhinge attached, -the lid being represented as closed, in black lines, and open, in red lines.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan of the same. i
Figure 3 represents a face view of the lid detached; and
Figure 4 a similar view of the hinge, as separate from the lid.l
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several gures.
My improvement has reference to jug-tops as applied to molasses-pitchers and other like vessels or bottles. These tops are usually made of a body, lid, hinge, and knob, the body being cemented on oi to thejug or bottle. In the manufacture of these articles in bulk or quantities, a slight difference in construction often has an important bearing upon the cost of production or general value of the article. Among the many peculiar features of these articles common to old constructions, as seen in mustard-pot metallic tops, and other like covers to diiferent pitchers or vessels, may he mentioned an interior iiange to the body, and the lid made to cover entirely the rim of vthe latter; also hinging the lid so as to rotate from the inside of the body. These features, which are very old in the construction of such articles, I adopt, but combine with them a certainn improvement or peculiarities of construction, which isvor are of no small importance. Thus, discarding all endeavors to construct the hinge and knob in one piece, which has involved making along incision through the lid'for the purpose, which weakens the construction, and not unfrequently gives anindifferent finish to the article, land insecurity of the hinge and knobs attachment to the lid, by reason of the soldering of these parts together around the edge of the long opening or incision made in the lid, I make `the hinge and lknob in two pieces, and, applying the hinge to its place on the lid, by a simple process cast the knob on the latter and to the hinge, thus uniting all three together in a strong and durable manner, Without having recourse to solden' ing, whereby a ncatness of finish is attained. I also covcr the hinge below by a plate or its equivalent, connected with the lower part of the ange, so that, when the body is cemented to the jug, the hinge is prevented from coming in contact with the cement, that is apt to make it work imperfectly.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of a jug-top, with its interior flange, a, and a plate or filling, b, connected with the lower portion of thetfla-nge, to protect the hinge B, or joint thereof, from contact with the cement when the top is iitted to the jug, which provision will be found'materially to contribute to the perfect working of the lid, hinged, as usual in such devices, to rotate from the inside of the body. G is thellid, and D the knob.
The hinge B may be adjusted to its place under the lid, when iitting the parts together, by projections c, made to enter perforations in the lid, but the fastening of the hinge, lid, and knob together is eected by forming the hinge with an opening, d, in it, and a corresponding hole, e, in the lid, so that, 'oy casting the knob D on the lid, the metal runs through these openings, d and e, and forms a rivet, s, or c ast projection, corresponding to a finished rivet, as shown in iig. 1, thus uniting these three sections, that is, hinge, iid, and knob, and making them as compact as if they were in one piece, without having recourse to solder, which, to make a neat job, requires great particularity land care, and does not oier the same security, besides requiring more expe- 'rienced or skilled labor to establish the junction.
To do away with all objectionable convex protrusion from or bulge in the lid in rear of the knob, and yet secure a close fit of the lid, and proper working of it, I give the whole lid what may be termed considerable elevation, with a slight downfall, or downwardly-incurring slope, all round the edges of thejug-top, thus avoiding all crippled appearance to the latter as a whole.
segno" 2 What is-heie claimed, and desired rto be secured by Letters Patent, is 1. The hinge, knob, and lid, madeseperate and distinct from each other, and united together by making perforations in the hinge and lid, as described, and casting the knob, to unite with them .by metal .used in producing the knob lentering sid perforations, to form a rivet, and whereby solder, to estblsh yche junction of .said parts, is avoided, and,'after riveting of the knob, dispensed with.
2. The combination, with the lid, hinged to rotate fiofni the inside of vvthe body, of the plate or filling b, connected with the lower part of the interior ange a of the body, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
