Description
.l To all pensons to whom these presents shall come en tea-potj-and` l with an earthen or elaybody` l vPTTIOMAHS SMITH, da., or BOSTON. MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 108,061, dated October 4, 1870.
" lMPROVEMENT iN EARTHEN TEA'POTS.
l The Schedule referred `to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
l Be itl known that L 'lHoMAs SMITH, Jr., of Boston, county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements y in Earthen Tea-Pots; and that the `following isa full andexactdescriptionof the same, reference beingv 4 `had tothe accompanying drawing.`
` The present invention relates to the so-called earth- It consistsi i llirst, of atea-pot constructed with a Britannia, or other metal,`spout and handle, or either, in combination econd, of a tea-pot havin g' an earthen constructed with a metallic side of the earthen bottom. l
r In `the accompanying drawing my improvements or clay body.
in tea-pots are illustrated, the gure .being a side View of au cart-hen tea'fpot constructed according to i bot-h parts thereof, the tea-pot being in vertical sectionat poilus, suitable to illustrate'one mode of securing the metallic spout and handles to the earthen body.
A in kthe drawing represents a tea-pot, of which B.isthebody; O, the top and lid ;V I), the handle and E, `.the spout. The bodyB isy made now practiced inthe manufacture ot* earthenware, and
to it,` atsuitable points, are applied the handle D and thespout E, in the present case both made of Britannia, but can bemade of other metal. l
l `lhe handle D and spoutE are each provided with studs orpins', a., oi" suitable length to pass through the thickness ofthe earthen body, aud project beyond and within thesanie, seas tobesusceptible of' being headedby the application of solder, for by upsetting'.
01' otl'1erwise, producing thereby, together with the use of any suitable plaster `or other cement, a tight joint and connection between. the body B and spout E andhaudle D, as is obvious.`
plate applied to the out@4 of clay, in any suitable mode.
The metallic top C, having the lid, is applied to the p body B in a similar manner to that described for the handle and spout.
H, the earthen bottom of the body B, and
I, ametallic plate.
This plate I is applied to outside of the bottom H, and is there secured, with plaster or other cement, by its flange b, around the edge c of the earthen bottom.
.Atem-pot, constructed as above described, combines in itself', inaddition to the4 advantages of au earthen potfor the steeping of tea, the advantages of durability, from the fact that those parts of the pot here-- tofore subject to breakage without extra care was taken in handling the pot, are, in this invention, made of metal, and thus beyond accidental breakage and also the still further advantage' o'f increased durability, by the metallic bottom` to the body of the tea-pot, from the security obtained against the cracking of the body of thepotby heat.' A
It is not intendedto liluit the invention to any particular means of i attachment vbetween the earthen body and metallic handle, spout, and bottom-plate.
Having thus described my improvements in earthen tea-pots,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tea-pot, constructed of Aan earthen body,
with a spout or handle, or both, made of metal, and l suitably applied to the earthen body, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of a metallic bottom plate with an earthen tea-pot, substantially as described, for the. purpose specified.
The above specification of my improvements in earthen tea-pots signed by me this 17th day of August, A. D. 1870.
" THOS. SMITH, JR.
