Description

tnted gime @anni @time HoMEn WEIGHT, 0E PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, AssIGNoEfI-o HIMSELE, HENRY II. ooLLrNs, AND BENJAMIN E. ooLLINs, 0E SAME PLAGE.
Letters Pate'nt No. 96,178, dated October 26, 1869; a'ntedatefl October 9, 1869.
IMPROVED MEANS DF. ATTACHING- TOPS T0 JUGS, .CRUETS, &c.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making pax-t of the lame.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HOMER WnIeHT, of Pittsburg, in' the county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvanie, have invented a new and improved Mode of Attaching Jug-Tops to J ugs, as well as Mustard and Pepper-Tops to Caster-Bottles, commonly called Cruets; and-I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had te the accompanying drawings, in which- Fgure 1 is a sectional diagram of a jug and top,
in which my improvement is. shown.
Figure 2 is-a perspe'etiveview `of a top-of-es jug, showing my improvement in part. Figure 3 is a perspective vien' of a jug and top, when attached. together by my improvement.
- Figure 4 is a sectional diagram of my improvement applied to a mustard-top and cruet.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. The nature of my invention consists in forming a flange on the bottom of a jug-top, or cruet-top, and a groove, or ring, around the neck of the jug or cruet, or by flaring the mouth of the jug or cruet, and thus forming a. lip, so that when the top is placed on the jug or cruet, and the ange is pressed into the said groove, or over the said ring, or around the-said flaring month or lip, the top will be attached to the jug or cruet without the use of cement or other mode of attachment.`
I make my jugs or cruets of glass, earthenware, or other suitable material, and the tops I make of tinplate, Britannia, or -other soft metal, and lof different sizes and forms.-
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe one practical mode of carrying it into effect, viz, in its application to jug-tops.
A is a ange attached to the body D of the jug-top,
' either by casting it solid with the body in soft metal,
or by forming theparts separately, and uniting them together -by solder or other means.
B is the neck of the jug, which .is made of a Asize to correspond with-the inner diameter of the flange A.
E is a groove encircling the neck B at a proper point fromthe top of the jug to A,receive the flange A.
The part-s, viz, ange A, neck B, and groove E, being made as described, I place the top upon the jug, as shown in iig. '1, and withl a burnisher held in the hand, or other appliance of pressure, Ipress thelower section or edge of the ange A around and into the groove E, as shown in g. 3, which forms aconneetion suciently tight for all practical purposes.
It is obvious, that the same result can be attained with the flange A, by forming a convex ring around the neck ofthe jug,'placed either immediately aroundthe top of the neck, or some distance below, or by aringthe mouth of the jug, and forming a lip, as
shown at F, tig. 4. It is also'plan, that the metallic tops of mustard and pepper-bottles, commonly called cruets, can be attached tothe cruets precisely bythe same means and appliances described above, as used for attaching jug-tops to1jugs.
In jugs made of a smooth substance, such as glass, I find it best to corrugate slightly the said groove, or ring, or flaring mouth or lip, so that in the act of pressing in the flange A, it will partake somewhat of the shape of the corrugations, as shown in fig. 3,
which gives the top a firmer hold on the j ugor cruet,
and prevents its turning. As further security to this end, ribs may be formed on the inner diameter of the flange A, corresponding with the corrugations.
Havingthus described my invention,
WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new asticle of manufacture,` attaching top s to jugs and crue-ts by the use ofthe flange A, in combination with 'the groove or convex E, ring, or flaring mouth or lip B, on the jug or cruet, when attached together, substantially as-described.
'HOMER WRIGHT.
