Description

@uitrit tette @anni ffite.
Leiters'Patent No. 76,367, dated April 7, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE'MANUIAGTURE OI SPOUTS POR TEA-POTS.;
@the Sttrmrlstefetteh tu in tljese tttets ttent mit mating @im nt tige same.
TO ALL WHOM' lIT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WEsTLAKE,`of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, und State of New Y0rlt,'have invented certain new and useful ImpIOvements in the Manufacture of Spouts for Tea-Kettles; and I do hereby declare' that thefollowing is e fulhcleur, and exact description of the sume, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a pnrt of this specification, in which- Fig-ure'l represents an inside view oi' the spout as swztgerl ready for putting together.
Figure 2, avcomplete spoutformed from the form shown in tlg. I; and
Figure 3, o. trensversesection of fig. 1. I
Like letters refer to the same parts in all of th'e figures.
Ileretoi'ore, in the construction ofibent spouts made of sheet metal, thcsides or sectionshave been swaged separately, or of two separute p ieees, and soldered together, forming two seams the entire length of thespout, which not only increased their liability to leak, but also increused the cost of manufacture. My invention consists in swuging the spouts from o. single piece vof metal, so as to formthem nearly their entire length with but one seam. Y
To enable others skilled in theart to make and use my'spouts in inyimproved method,I will describe the same.
The tin or other sheet metal which is to be manufactured, is cut into proper sizes for the size and length ot' the spout to be made, and sivaged in the form shown at fig. 1, the sides A and Af, each forming one-halt'V of the spout, und a. ridge; B, formed between them, except when they are bent or curved'. The piece is cut at 1 E, so that when the sides are brought together, the proper angle or incline will he given to the spout when A attached to the tea-pot or kettle. The upper end is also cut so as toform the proper curve, and a small piece of metal, D, is left so us to prevent, Whenthe sides are brought together, the formation of lu hole at the commencement of the curve. When properly swztged, the metal is bent nt B, and the edges c brought together; the point D attached to A', is turned under A, and-from that point to the end the edges are soldered ns at e. By leaving the point D at the commencement ot` the curve, theformution of a hole will be prevented when the parts are lapped over each other for soldering purposes. These spouts when formed ure attached in the usual manner.
It will be. obvious that handles for coffee-pots, tea-pots, and other articles, can be made in the manner herein described for making spouts.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The method herein describedioi' forming curved or bent spouts of n single piecelot' sheet metal, substrintially as specified. Y
WILLIAM WESTLAKE.
