Description

esta smanteut ilffite.' d
W.l J. GORDON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. i Letters Patent No. 87,840, dated Mwrchl, 1869.
IMPROVEMNT IN AIR-TIGHT`CANS.
-Ph- The Schedule ret-erred to in theseLettexl' Patent and making put of the hama.
To all whom it ma/y concer/1i:
Be it known that I, W. IGORDON, of Philadelphia,
in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Air-Tight Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
, This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in cans for preserving fruit and 'other articles, and for containing lye,^paint, and all substances f a similar nature; and consists in the manner iu which the can is closed, as 'will be hereinafter more fully described;
The accompanying drawing represents a. can constructed or closed according to my invention.
A is the can, which is a plain cylinder, with top and bottom soldered on in theusual manner; but the top B has an orice suiciently large to allow of the .filling of the with fruit, or any-article which it .may be desired to preserve air-tight, (or otherwise,)` for' sale or use.
The top is beaded, and s shaped by swaging, so
that the edge is turned down atan angle inclining in-v ward, as seen in the drawing at c c.
D represents the cover or disk which fills thefoice. This cover or disk Ais swa'ged out or formed v wvitlia ange, e, the upper portionof which is made to tthe angle c of the top B.
Thediameter of the lower portion corresponds with that ofthe lower edge of the orice, or'it may be a trifle largerthan the orifice, so that when it is forced down, the oriice willnot only be closed air-tight, but
there will be sufcient friction to hold the cover tightlyV in place.
Gare is taken to have a perfect edge to'the lip. or bevel c in the top, and also to have the cover correspondingly perfect, so that when it isA forced into the orifice the joint shall be complete.
By this arrangement all machinery for closing the can is dispensed with.
The label (stating the contents of the can) is placed over `the cover D, and the can is readyfor'market, thus greatly lessening the expense and trouble of putting up fruit, or properly securing paint, lye, and other articles of a similar nature.
`Having thus described 'my invention,
I claim as new,` andl desirer to secure by Letters Patent-y v VIn combination Vwith a can,` when the top is formed with an 'inclined surface c, the cover D, constructed and applied substantially as desclibed and for the pur-4 poses vset forth.
` W. J. GORDON.
