W. W. STEVENS, or PORTLAND, MAINE.
Letters Patent No. 78,901, dated Jame 16, 1868.-
Iurnovuuuur IN rm rors.
the gtlgthult ttfttttil hi it institutes $162M tut mating hurt at the nun.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: L
Be it known that I, W. W. Mutants, of Portland, in the county of Gumberlaud,"and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improved Tea-Pot; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which .will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being to the. accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichp Figure 1 shows a top view of my improvement, viz, a peculiarly-formed bottom-for a tea-pot. v Figure.2 is a section of the same taken through the centre, and showing the formation of the bottom. f
The side, a, in fig. 2, represents the outside of the bottom, orthat part which is-next to the stove or other article upon which the tea-pot may be placed. The side, 6, represents the insi de'of the .bottom of the tea p'ot Q I that is, when it is standipg or resting upon any article, it rests upon the projecting rim d c, which extends around the entire circumference of the circular bottom.
It is well known that Britannia and other materials liable to melt from heat cannot be safely employed in the manufacture'of this article, because of this liability to melt when placed upon any heatingnppuratus, and
also-that convenience requires that tea-pots, &c., should beso made as that they may be, without injury, placed j upon a'heating-apparatus, in order to keep. the contents hot. Earthenware, aless durable article, and one sub Y ject to fracture, is' on this account much employed.
The object of my invention is so to construct the bottom of a tea-pot that it can be safely employed to hold the articles usually placed in it while being heated, and this when the vessel is made of. material subject to the liability of melting by heat.
My improvement consists-in a peculiar formation of the plate or disk forming the bottom oi the tea-pot,
by which not the whole lower outside surface of the said bottom will rest upon. the stove or other heating- .apparatus, but only an edge, projecting slightly below the outer surface of the bottom, and raising; it somewhat from the stove, &c., is permitted to touch the surface from which the heat is derived.
I obtain this projecting edge by bending the outeredge ofthe circular bottom downward, as seen in 1, and clearly illustrated in the section, fig, 2. d a show the edge upon which the tea-pot rests g on its bottom. Thus but a minute portion of the bottom comes in actual contact with a heated surface, While, between the residue offltbe bottom, a, and the stove, there is left a space sufficient to remove the liability of melting. l i
The body of the tea-pot is attached to such bottom in the ordinary way, which I do not claim; neither do I claim an improvement in the construction of Britannia pots, by making the lowerbody and bottom ofsuch vessels of iron or metal, capable of bearing much greater heat than Britannia, asseen in the patent of E. B. Manning, June 3, 1862, No.,35,4-57.
The nature of my invention is such that it does not require the bottom to be made of a metal. capable of sustaining a high degree of heat without melting, but the bottom may be made of tin, copper, or other metal. By reason of the contact of only the downward-bcnt edge of the bottom, the durability of the pot largely increased, because the wholebottom surface is preserved from contact with anything upon which the pot may be placed. The body of the tea-pot is united with this bottom by spinning up the lower part or bottom edge, so as to conform to the inner sloping sides of-the raised part, 'thus leaving a shoulder on the outside, and then soldering thc same, as common. The section is showninl the drawing the wrong side up, as the teaspot rests on the edges d c, labeling the inside of the bottoun I am not aware of any bottom of this form resting on edges cl 0, and with this-method of application.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is-
The improvement in the construction of potsliable to melt from the influence of heat, consisting of the bottom as herein shown, and applied as illustratecl, for-the purposes set forth;
