Description
DESIGN.
W. SHERWOOD.
f-A POT.
Patented Aug. 2,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DESIGN FOR A TEA-POT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,398, dated August 2, 1881.
Application tiled January 24, 138i. 'l`r|n oi' paient T years.
To all whomv tt may concern Be it known that I, GEORt'fE \V. SHER- WOOD, ot New Brighton, in the county of Beaver and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and uset'ul Design for IIarthenware 'Iea-lots; and I do hereby' declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accoltipanying drawings, forming a part ot' this speciiication, in which Figure l is a sectional view of my design, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same.
lIeretotoreearthenware and similar tea-pots, though formed with a taper from the base to the lip or top, have been made with flat bottoms, or with rims around the bottom, which obstructed the outlines and gave the article the general form of a truncated cone or pyramid.
My design is produced by giving to the bottom of the pot the form ot' a hemisphere the outline whereof is unobstructed except at the points where the supporting knobs or feet are attached.
The general outlineof thepotwhen thecover is in place will be oviform; but it is apparent that the leading feature, and the one which gives character to the article, is the hemispherical bottom, the form of the handle and spout being immaterial provided the rules of symmetry are regarded.
I will now proceed to describe the design more fully.
In the drawings, a indicates the body of a tea-pot; b, the cover or lid; c, the spout; d,the handle, c, thebottom, and fknobs, projections, or feet which support the pot.
The body a has the general form of a frustum ofaeone, while the bottomeisahemisphere ot" a diameter equal to the base of the cone.
The spout c and handle tare preferablyv formed with curved lilies which harmonize with the general design.
The cover or lid l; isa hemisphere whose diameterapproximates thc least diameter of the frustum.
The size or form ot feet]- is not material, provided they do not materially obstruct the outlines ofthe bottom or detract from the general etiect. Usually they are tapering or coniform, as shown in the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A design i'or tea-pots, consisting of the body thereot' in the form ot` a frustum ot` a cone, and the bottom in the form ot' a hemisphere the diameter ot' which corresponds to that ot' the base ot' the cone, the outlines ofthe bottom being unobstructed, except by the knobs or points of support, substantially as specified.
2. As a design tor tea-pots, the oviform configuration consisting ot' the body ot' the pot in the form ot a t'rustum of a cone, the bottom in the form ot a hemisphere ot' diameter corresponding to the base otl the cone, and the lid in the form of a hemisphere ot' diameter approximating the least diameter ot' the frustum, substantially as speeited.
In testimony whereot' I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORG l \V. SIYIERWOOD.
