Description

WILLIAM W. LYMAN, or' WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT;
Letters .Patent No. 80,296,1dated July 28, 1868.
IMPRO'VI'IDv FRUIT-J AR.
@igt .rlgehtle mamita in 111m stters gatmtzmh mating tutti tite same.
l TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCFRN:l
Be it known that'I, WILLIAM W. LYMAN, of West Meriden, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new andV useful Improvements in Preserve-Vessels 'and toenable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, by referring to the drawings,
in which the' same letters indicate like parts in each of the gures.
The nature of this invention will be understood from the specificationand drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. i i Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation liigurel 3 is a top view. a represents the 'body of a jar. v b is a projecting ring or collar, formed around the neck of a jar. Said ring or collar is cut away or notched on the two opposite sides 'ofthe jar, so as to'form. openings, c, through I which the ends or hooks of a clamp pass when being placed with the cover upon the jar, so that whenthey are.
turned around on tothe incline surfaces, they (the ends of the clamplvvill take hold ofthe under side of said ring, and firmly compress the cover .to' -its seat or collar.
d is a shoulder or 1seat, formed outside of the inner Walls of the jar, for the purpose of receiving and forming a seat for a packing-ringer gasket, e, by which the jar is sealed and'rendered impervious to air.
j' is afmetal tiange-cover, formed in any proper or vdesired shape, substantially such as shown, having wedge-'shaped elevationsgg, formed on ther top Vot` the cover, made in the form of arcs concentricwith the circular margin of the `cover.
h is a clamp or yoke, which may `be made oi a iiat piece of sheet metal, cutout or bent to the proper shape, or it may be made of wire or cast metal, of the proper form or'shape, adapted to its'symmetrical appearance and the oice it lhas to perform, substantially as shown.
Thisclamp or yoke is secured loosely to the centre 'ofY the cover by a pin, z', which serves as a fulcrum for the clampto turn upon, and to hold Iit in its proper'position and place in connection with the cover. Italso serves to tighten the gripe ot the clamp upon they cover as the preserves cool olf, and thereby causes the yoke to be more firmly compressed upon the cover, and the cover upon the. gasket. By this arrangement, the yoke and cover are secured together convenient for"` use, and not liable to be lost or misplaced, thus eheapening the manufacture, and-producing a more perfect and desirable article for use and trade.
I believe I have tbusshown the nature, construction, and advantage of this invention, so as to enable others skilled to make and use the same therefrom.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The combination of flange-cap f, having incline orwedge-elevati'ons upon its outer edge, g, wtha. gasketseat, d, gasket e, yoke h, and ring b, substantially as and for the purpose described. y
4 2. The combinationot the flange-cap f, elevations g, yoke and pin f1. e', with the gasketand seat e d, `suhstantially as and for the purpose described.
WM. W. LYMAN. [In s.].
