' my invention, the cover being v lis the body I .the outside of the UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
WILLIAM F. HYATT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
cLosURE Fon cANs.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. HYATT,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brookl n, in the county of Kings and 5 State of ew York, (with post-olice address .262 Garfield Place,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Cans and other Receptacles, of which the following is aspecification.l
y invention relates to tops or closures for cans or receptacles made of sheet metal and is desi ed'more particularly for cans or receptac es containing a dentifrice or other powder.
The invention has special reference to cans which have a hinged cover ,secured in closed position by a spring catch as described in a prior application for patent filed by me February 20th, 1904, Serial Number 194,603.I
One of the objects of my invention is to make the closure perfectly tight when the cover is down.
Other objects are to secure cheapness of construction, together with strength and stability.
To these ends, my invention consists first in the provision for the sheet metal neck of the can, of a continuous sheet metal reinforcing collar ap lied thereto immediately beneath the mout or opening and to which collar the sheet metal cover is hinged, said collar being secured by means of a bead spun in the neck and collar and serving both as a means of attachment for the collar and as a projection for engagement by a spring catch carried by the cover.
My invention consists further in the details of 'construction and combinations of parts hereinaterset forth and then specified in. the claims.
'In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a can top embodying closed. Fig. 2 shows the cover open. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section throu h the neck and cover. Fig. 4 shows the blan from which the cover may be formed.
ofthe can and 2 is the neck, the mouth of which is closed by the cover 3. The latter may be of any desired form but -preferabl has al depressed center fitting into t lthemout like a stopper, and an annular depending-skirt or flange 5 fitting down over Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 10,1904. l Serial No. 223.958.
mouth. The neck 2 at its:
Patented Jan. 7, 1908.
outer or upper edge is turned over inwardly to form a mouth, 4thus securing strengthor stiffness at this point where the cover or stopper fits into the same. p
Upon the `neck 2 is a sheet metal collar 4 secured against detachment b one or more outwardly projecting annular eads 6, forming a projection or Shoulder over which the catch 7 on the cover may spring and hold the cover firmly closed by locking on the underside of the bead.
The catch may consist, as described in m prior application, of a spring tongue exten ing from the cover integra therewith and having a bead .at 8, adapted to be en aged by the thumb or finger when it is desired to open the cover, and located as shown, so that upward pressure under the bead 8 willtend to swing the lower end of the tongue outward away from en agement beneath the bead.
From the co lar 4 extends an ear or proection 9, preferably integral therewith an to which the cover is directly hin e This hinging is shown as effected in t e manner described in my prior application, by providing the cover with an ear or projection 10,
which is provided with a slot 1 1 and is hinged to the ear 9 by passing the tip of the ear through the slot and bending it around as shown at l2. v By the above construction I secure stifl'- ness in the neck thus permitting the body ofthe neck to be made of very thin sheet metal and also producing a firm locking and closure of the can. Moreoverthe hin e ear 9 being formed on the sheet metal col ar instead of the sheet metal neck, the manufacture of the closure is considerably facilitated. 1f desired, the neck and collar may be indented asl shown at 13 to prevent the collar from turning on the neck.
What lclaim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a sheet metal can having a sheet metal neck, of a cover having a -spring catch and a continuous sheet metal reinforcing collar secured to the neck by a bead spun in the sheet metal of the neck and collar, and serving for lengagement by theV sprin catch carried by the cover.
- 2. n a sheet metal can, the combination with the lsheet metal neck, of a continuous sheet metal reinforcing collar secured thereto by anannular-bead spun in the neck and .col-
lar, a hinge ear integral `with the collar and a cover having a hinge ear, 4said ears .being hinged together by interlocking the tip Of one i in a slot in the other, and a spring catch integral with the cover and adapted to engage With the bead On the collar.
3. In a sheet 'metal can, the combination with the sheet metal neck thereof turned down nwaidiy at its mouth, of a metal collar encircling the neck and having a hinge ear 10 integra] With it for attachment of the cover and a bead spun in the neck and collar below the inwardly turned mouth,v asand for the purpose described.
Signed at Asbury Park in the county of Monmouth and State Of New Jeisey this 31 15 day of August A.. D. 1904.
WILLIAM 4F. HYATT.
