UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. May 1, 1906.
Application filed September 26, 1905. Serial No. 280,208-
T0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY GEORGE TAY- LOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Match- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to single-delivery match-safes, and its primary object is to provide a novel and highly-useful device of this character having combined therewith a tray adapted to carry and support the remaining features of the invention and designed to be used as a burned-match and ash receptacle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated with a novel form of carrying-frame mounted for vertical movement upon a delivery-plate and supporting the match-receptacle, whereby a downward movement of the frame will cause a single match to be delivered.
A still further object of the invention is to provide braces which are adapted to support the delivery-plate in vertical position and to limit the upward movement of the carrying frame to obviate any liability of the matchreceptacle being moved off of the deliveryplate, said braces being provided with r0ughened surfaces, whereby a match may be ignited.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a matchsafe constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central longitudinal sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof.
Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals, 1 designates a tray which is adapted to carry the remaining features of the invention and which is designed to be used as a burned-match and ash receptacle. 2 designates a delivery-plate rising vertically and arranged centrally of the tray, the lower end of said plate 2 being provided with oppositely and horizontally disposed flanges 3. This plate is secured in applied position by means of bolts 4 or their equivalent passing through the flanges 3 and engaging the tray 1. The
upper end of the delivery-plate is flared, as at 5, to provide a match-receiving groove 6, eX- tending throughout the entire width of the plate 2. Mounted for vertical movement upon the plate 2 is a carrying-frame which comprises channeled end members 7, embracing the opposite edges of the plate 2 and having their lower ends connected by means of bars 8, which are arranged upon each side of the plate 2. The upper ends of the channeled members 7 are forked, as at 8, to provide for the reception of an angular matchreceptacle 9. This receptacleis provided with an opening 10, through which the upper end of the plate 2 projects, and with a deliveryopening 11. The receptacle, owing to its attachment to the carrying-frame, is also adapted for vertical movement, and the upper end of the delivery-plate is located centrally thereof. The receptacle is adapted to have motion imparted thereto by means of one hand, and when the same is at the height of its upward movement the matches which are located therein will, owing to the peculiar construction of the receptacle, gravitate toward the center thereof. When the receptacle is at the extremity of its downward movement, the match-receiving groove will be located within the opening 11, and as a match is deposited in said groove during the downward movement of the receptacle the match will be presented to the opening 11, from which point it may be readily taken.
12 designates braces which are located on each side of the delivery-plate and which have their upper reduced ends 13 rigidly secured to said plate. The lower ends of the braces 12 are disposed horizontally to provide securing-flanges 14, through which bolts 15 or their equivalent pass to engage the tray 1. The upper faces of these braces are provided with roughened surfaces 16, by means of which a match may be ignited. The upward movement of the carrying-frame is limited by the engagement of the bars 8 with the braces 12, whereby all liability of the receptacle being moved off of the plate 2 is obviated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and advantages of my improved match-safe will be readily apparent without requiring any further extended explanation. It will be seen that the device is simple of construction, that said construction permits of its manufacture at small cost, and that it is exceedingly well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a match-safe comprising a tray, a de-' livery-plate provided with a groove and secured to said tray, a carrying-frame comprising channeled members adapted to embrace the ends of said plate and provided with upper forked ends, and a match-receptacle carried by the forked ends of said members.
'2. A match-safe comprising a tray, a delivery-plate provided with a groove and secured to said tray, a carrying-frame comprising channeled end members adapted to embrace the ends of said plate and provided with upper forked ends, the lower ends of said channeled members being connected by means of plates, and a match-receptacle carried by the forked ends of said end members.
3. A match-safe comprising a tray, a delivery-plate having its upper end flared to provide a groove and having its lower end disposed horizontally to provide securingflanges, a carrying frame provided with forked ends movably mounted upon said delivery-plate, a match-receptacle carried by said forked ends, and braces having their upper ends reduced and secured to said delivery-plate, and their lower ends horizontally disposed to provide securing-flanges attached to the frame, said braces being provided with roughened surfaces.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY GEORGE TAYLOR.
