To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC O. UPHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paste.Iars, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to receptacles for holding paste and the like. Its object is to provide a compact, simple, attractive paste jar for use on a desk, or in the library, or elsewhere.
It consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my paste jar. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention with the cover removed.
A represents a paste jar of any suitable size, shape and material. Preferably it is of glass, and provided with a flat removable cap 2, which may screw on or be otherwise suitably secured in place.
Inside the jar is a water-containing reservoir 3 which may be integral with the jar, or preferably removable as here shown, being made of sheet metal. This water reservoir may occupy any suitable location in the jar, and maybe of any appropriate shape or size. It is preferred though to arrange it about centrally oi the jar and extending diametrically thereof and need be no wider than the paste applying brush 4. The latter is of any suitable description, and is preferably of a length about equal to the diagonal of the receptacle and has means at its end as the cross-head 5, to permit it to hook over the top of the reservoir, and prevent its dropping into the water. At the same time it lies Hat and is entirely contained inside the jar and beneath the cover when the latter is screwed on. This arrangement of the reservoir, and the construction of the brush constitute the invention. It does away with the projecting top necessary to contain and protect the brush. By thus providing a flattop paste pot with self contained reservoir and brush, it is easily and economically packed and shipped. It is also an attractive article on the desk and not liable to be upset accidentally. In order that the hook or cross-head end of the brush handle may not accidentally be dropped into the reservoir, I prefer to construct the brush so that it has a flattened guide portion or head 6, which is narrow enough in one direction just to allow the brush to fit into the reservoir, while the head is elongated in the other direction so that the major axis of the head exceeds the width of the reservoir; the pin or cross-head 5 of the brush lying perpendicular to the plane of the major axis of the head or guide. By this construction it is impossible to place the brush in the reservoir in such a manner that the cross-head will fail to engage over the rim of the reservoir in the proper manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A. paste jar having a movable top and having a sepa rate horizontally-elongated watencontaining reservoir, in combination with a brush adapted to be inserted into the reservoir, said brush having a cross-bar at its upper end adapted to engage the rim of the water reservoir to prevent the brush dropping into said reservoir. 7
2. The combination of a jar, a movable top therefor, said jar having a water contained reservoir separate from the paste chamber, and a brush supported in said reservoir, said brush having a flattened guide portion, said guide portion permitting the insertion of the brush into the reservoir when said guide portion is turned in the plane of the reservoir and preventing the insertion of the brush therein when said guide portion is turned at right angles to the plane of the reservoir, and a cross-head on the brush to engage the rim of the reservoir and arranged at right angles to said guide.
