HOG-TROUGH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916.
Application filed May 17, 1915. Serial No. 28,703.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW A. FAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing near Pierson, (residence being in Cherokee county,) in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog-Troughs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates broadly to improvements in stock feeding devices, and more particularly to hog troughs, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, yet eflicient means of detachably securing devices of this class in the runways of pens of the stock, whereby they may be readily removed for cleaning or for other purposes, Without the necessity of entering the pen or the like.
With this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in the unique combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In describing the invention, I shall refer to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein;
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section as seen on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the manner in which the trough proper is removed from the supporting frame thereof; Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view; Fig. 6 is a detail longitudinal section as seen on the plane indicated by the line 66 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 7 is a top plan view, showing one manner of securing the trough carrying frame to the upright wall of the pen.
In these drawings which constitute a part of the application, the numerals 1 designate a pair of substantially rectangular upright end frames which have inlet throats at their front ends as disclosed more particularly in Figs. 1 and 4, said ends being of slightly greater height than the rear ends of the frames. The frames 1 are formed of angle iron bars bent into U-shape formation, the free ends 8 of these bars being disposed at the front of the frames and being connected by upright bars 4: riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the outer sides thereof. It is to be observed, that the laterally extending flanges of the two angle iron bars eX- tend toward each other and are disposed at the outer edges of the numerous bars of the frames, with the exception of the bars a, the latter having no flanges in order that the front ends of the frames 1 may remain open for a reason yet to he described.
The two frames 1 above described are adapted to receive therein the opposite ends of the trough proper, in order to rigidly support the same, it therefore becoming expedient to rigidly connect said frames. For this purpose, any number of longitudinally disposed bars 5 maybe riveted or otherwise secured at their opposite ends to the bottom bars of the frames 1, two bars 5 being shown in the present application as crossed at their intermediate portions and connected at these points. By so connecting the two end frames 1, a main frame structure is pro vided in which the trough 6 is removably housed.
The trough 6 is shown in the present embodiment of the invention as being of semicylindrical formation and as having its opposite ends provided with rectangular end frames or members 7 which are received in the frames 1 between the flanges thereof, removal of the trough being normally prevented by the upright stops 8 which are bent upwardly from the front ends of the lower bars of said frames 1, such stops being of suflicient height to abut the front ends of the frames or members 7 when the latter are confined therein, but being disengaged by said frames when the latter are raised the necessary amount, whereupon the entire trough may be pulled forwardly and either totally or partially removed.
In applying the invention to use, the frame structure is secured by any preferred means, either to the floor of the pen or the like or to upright cleats 9 which are secured to the inner side of the wall P of such pen (see Fig. 7 In either case, the front ends of the frames are disposed immediately in rear of an opening 0 formed in the afore said wall, such opening being of sufficient size to allow the trough 6 to be removed therethrough, this being essential since by raising said trough the necessary amount to disengage the stops 8, it may be pulled forwardly, thus allowing the feed to be device will be highly eflicient and durable and will possess a number of advantageous features.
In the drawings, certain specific details of construction have been shown for accomplishing probably the best results and in the foregoing, such details have been described, but it will be evident, I need not be limited thereto otherwise than to the extent to which the appended claims restrict me.
I claim n 1. In combination, a movable trough, a pair of rectangular end members secured one to each end thereof and having horizontal 'top and bottom edges, and upright front and rear edges, fixed L-iron bottom edges receiving' in their angles the bottom bars of the end members, stops rising from the front ends of the L-iron bottom bars in advance of said end members, upright L-iron bars rising from the rear ends of said L-iron bottom bars and receiving in their angles the upright rear edges of the end members, L-iron top bars extending forwardly from said upright L-iron bars and receiving in their angles the top edgesof said end members, and additional upright bars connecting the front ends of the L-iron top and bottom bars and spacing said L-iron top bars above the end members a distance equal to the height of the aforesaid stops, said additional bars being spaced laterally from the front edges of said end members to allow the latter andthe trough to be moved forwardly when raised above the stops.
2. In combination, a hog trough having a pair of upright rectangular horizontally elongated end members secured one to each end of said trough, a retaining structure for the trough consisting of a pair of horizontally elongated rigidly connected four-sided retaining frames receiving the aforesaid end members, each of said retaining frames consisting of an L-iron bar whose central portion stands upright and snugly receives in its angle the upright rear end of the adjacent end member, one end portion of said L- iron bar being bent laterally in a horizontal direction and snugly receiving in its angle the bottom of the adjacent end member, the horizontal base flange of said horizontally bent end portion of the L-iron bar being bent upwardly to a slight extent in advance of the adjacent end member to form a stop to prevent said end frame from being withdrawn from its respective retaining frame until raised above said stop, the other end portion of the aforesaid L-iron bar being bent in a substantially horizontal direction and receiving in its angle the top of the adjacent end member, the last-named horizontally bent portion of the L-iron bar being inclined upwardly from its fixed to its free end to such an extent as to allow the front end of the adjacent end member to be raised above its respective stop, and an upright bar secured to the outer sides of both horizontally bent portions of the L-iron bar at the free ends thereof and spaced laterally from the end members, said bars being adapted for contact with upright cleats at the ends of a horizontally elongated opening in the side of a pig pen and being formed with bolt holes to receive bolts passed through 7 said cleats.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
