To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Jnssn G. POPPERT, a

. citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of \Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cigar-Holder and Ash-Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in combined cigar-holders and ash-receptacles.

.The object of my invention is to provide a light and neat attachment for cigars which will catch the ashes of the cigar and prevent them from falling, whereby the danger and annoyance arising from the falling of tire and ashes from a lighted cigar when being smoked upon the .clothes of a person or the furniture of a room is avoided and the objection to smoking indoors for such reasons is largely overcome.

The construction of my invention is explained by reference to the accompanying.

A is a cigar.

B is a receptacle to which the cigar is attached by the clampingarms C and D. The clamping-arm C is rigidlyconnected to the end of the tray by the bracket E, while the other clamping-arm, D, is connected to the arm 0 by the parallel arms F and G and pivotal belt or pin H. The lower ends of the arms C and D are thrown apart by the spring I, the central portion of which spring is coiled around the pin H in such a manner that the recoil of the spring has a tendency to throw the lower ends of the clamping-arms against which they bear apart and their upper ends together around the cigar.

To prevent the ashes which accumulates in the receptacle B from escaping from the end of the receptacle, as they might otherwise do when the person using the same inclines forward,-I preferably provide the front or outer end of the receptacle with an inclosing end piece J, which covers the ends of thecigar and prevents the ashes from escaping, as stated.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 K represents the ash-receptacle, and L the cover. The cover L is adapted to partially surround the receptacle K and may, ifdesired, be turned on its longitudinal axis, so as to entirely inclose the upperside of the receptacle, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 7, whereby the receptacle, together with the cigar, may, if desired, be placed in a persons pocket. The cover L is provided with a plurality of apertures P to permit of the circulation of' air to and from the receptacle when the cover is in the closed position. The respective ends of the cover L are cylindrical in shape, whereby they form retaining-bands which entirely surround the receptacle K and serve to hold the cover in place. The front end of the cover L is open, and the bracket E is connected with the end of the receptacle K. I

I am aware of the fact that closely-iitting ash-receptacles have previously been used in connection with cigars while being smoked; but in such case the receptacle becomes heated to a high temperature in a few moments time and is liable to burn the fingers of the person using the same, while by my form of construction shown the cigar is supported above and entirely free from contact with the receptacle itself, whereby the receptacle does not become heated and the danger of burning the fingers of the smoker is thereby avoided.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-

1. The device herein described for catching and retaining the ashes of a cigar while being smoked consisting in the combination of a receptacle open on one side for a portion of its length, clamping-arms C and D, arm-supporting bracket E rigidly connected with and projecting from the rear vertical end wall of said portion of its length connected with the periphery of said ash-receptacle and adapted to be' turned on its longitudinal axis from a closed position above the mouth of said receptacle, partially around, and beneath the same, and means for clamping said receptacle to a cigar, substantially as, and for the purpose specified.
