0. A. HODGDEN.
CIGAR HOLDER.
Patented Oct. 18,1881.
Z Z/wees: zgizzgewr M I v 6 Owen;
, lUNrTen STATES CHARLES A. HODGDEN, OF DUXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
CIGAR-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,315, dated October 18, 1881.
Application filed March 8, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, CHARLES A. HODGDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at DuX- bury, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Rests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient receptacle for a smoking cigar, whereby it may be held vertically with the lighted end uppermost, so as to prevent the smoke from passing through the body of the cigar when not in use.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 represents a. perspective view of a cigar-holder embodying my invention, the cigar held bythc same being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents a side view of said holder when its spring-jaws are folded and Fig. 3 represents a detail view of the saidjaws.
A and A designate two U-shaped springclamps or pairs of spring-jaws, each clamp being preferably made ot'one piece of sheet metal, and clamp A being the smaller, so thatit may turn freely in clamp A. p
B designates a bracket or fastening-plate, which consists of a strip of sheet metal shaped like the three sides of a square, and having its lower end, I), turned inward and upward, so as to be capable of a certain elastic clamping action. These three parts A, A, and B are secured together bya pivot-stud, C, which allows either clamp A or A to turn without moving the other. As the smaller clamp or pair of jaws is within the larger one, this independent movability on theircomtnon axis makes it easy (N0 model.)
to turn the two into the same vertical plane or into vertical planes at right angles to each other. In the latter case they constitute, as shown in Fig. 1, an elastic cigar-holder of approximately bell shaped construction, and adapted to receive and hold the tapering mouth end of a cigar. The bracket B will tightly grasp the edge of a' table-top or other article. Of course, the smoke of the burning cigar will pass directly upward from its ignited end without entering the unburned portion at all or giving a rank flavor to any of the leaves. When the cigar is burned out or the smoker 'no longer needs a receptacle for it, this holder may be detached from the table, the clamps A A turned into line with each other and with bracket B, and the article placed in the vestpocket of the smoker, where its smallness, flatness, and lightness will prevent it from causing any inconvenience.
Of course, the form of the bracket or attaching device B may be considerably varied to correspond to the support which it clamps upon; also, a small set-screw might be substituted for the elastic end I). The construction shown is obviously better, however, since it involves less trouble. The simpleapplication of the spring-clamp to a table-top with a little gentle pressure is sufficient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of outer clamp or jaws, A, with inner clamp orjaws, A, bracket B, and pivot-stud C, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. HODGDEN.
Witnesses VIANNA LORING, ZILPHA. LORING.
