JAR CLOSURE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 25. 1905.
QXMMa owo E a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 1906.
Application filed September 25, 1905. Serial No. 280.003.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, EDGAR CAMPBELL HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ar-Closures and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in jar-closures.
The object of the invention is to provide a j ar-closure in the form of a cap adapted to fit within the neck of the jar-andto provide means whereby said cap may be quickly locked and tightly clamped into engagement with the neck closure.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the upper end of the jar, showing the application of the invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View through the neck of the jar and the cap, taken on a line with the alined locking apertures and recesses formed therein; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the locking-bail.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the jar, which may be formed of any desired material and in any desired shape, said jar being here shown as provided with a neck 2, in which adjacent to the upper end thereof is formed an inwardlyprojecting shoulder 3. On the shoulder 3 is adapted to be placed an elastic washer 4. Formed in the sides of the neck at diametrically opposite points are apertures 5. Adapted to be inserted in said upper end of the neck is a cap 6, on the upper edge of which is formed a laterallyrojecting annular flange 7, said flange belng adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the jar-neck, while the lower edge of the cap is adapted to rest upon the washer or gasket 4 on the shoulder 3. In the side walls of the cap, at diametrically opposite points, are formed recesses 8, which when the cap is placed in the neck are adapted to aline with the apertures 5 in the latter. In order that the cap may of the jar to form an air-tight pointed out in the I be securely held in the neck, a bail-shaped locking device 9 is provided, said device having on its ends right-angularly-projecting locking-fingers 10, which are adapted to be inserted or sprung into the alined apertures and recesses in the neck and cap of the jar, thereby securely locking said parts together. In order that the cap 6 may be forced downwardly onto the washer 4 and shoulder 3 to form an air-tight closure, the ends of the fingers 10 are bent laterally to form cam-lugs, which when the bail is turned downwardly into engagement with the sides of the jarneck will be engaged with the lower walls of the recesses 8 in the cap, thereby forcing said cap into tight engagement with the washer 4 and shoulder 3, whichwill form an air-tight connection between said parts.
When it is desired to remove the cap from the jar, the bail 5 is swung upwardly and the fingers 1O sprung out of engagement with the recesses and apertures in said ca and neck, after which the cap may be readi y removed from the neck of the jar. A locking device such as herein shown and described may be quickly applied to and removed from a jar and when applied thereto will securely hold the cap in position thereon to effectively close the jar.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended ex lanation.
Various changes in the orm, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a jar-closure, the combination with the neck of a jar having formed therein oppositely-disposed apertures and an inwardlyprojecting annular shoulder, of a cap adapted to fit into said neck and into engagement with the shoulder therein, said cap having oppositely-disposed recesses formed in its sides to aline with the apertures in said neck, an elastic washer arranged between said cap and shoulder, a bail-shaped locking device having right-angularly-bent locking-fingers formed on its ends to engage the alined apertures and recesses in said neck and cap, to clamp said cap into tight engagement with ICO when said bail is turned downwardly said laterally-bent ends will engage the lower walls of the recesses in said cap and force the latter downwardly into engagement with the washer and shoulder of the jar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
