BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1915.
Application filed June 26, 1914. Serial No. 847,388.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FRANKLIN MAC- INnon, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottle closures and, more especially, to such closures as are intended to prevent the taking of poison, or the like from a bottle, by mistake.
The objects of the invention are: to provide a simple cheap and effective closure of this character which may be readily and easily placed upon a bottle, or removed therefrom when desired; to provide a closure of this character which is so constructed that the attention of one, attempting to open a bottle provided with such closure, is necessarily called to the character of the contents thereof.
With these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, my invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of parts set forth in the following description, more particularly pointed out in the claims, and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, in place upon the neck of a bottle. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device before being bent to engage a bottle neck. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. 7
Referring to said drawings by numerals:a strip, or band 1, preferably made of sheet metal, terminates in the substantially semicircular ends 2, the ends of which semicircular portions are bent in opposite directions as shown most clearly at 3, to form a catch or lock.
The strip, or band 1 has punched therefrom, and bent at right angles thereto, the prong 4: adapted to engage the top of a cork. Also punched from strip 1, at equal distances on either side of prong A, are the angularly disposed prongs 5 adapted to engage the sides of a cork when the device is I in place upon a bottle.
In practice my invention is used as follows :The device is bent into a rectangle, as shown in Fig. 1, the prong 4 being pressed into the top of the cork, at the center thereof, the semicircular ends are brought against the neck of the bottle, just below the flange at the top of said neck, and the ends 3 forced into locking engagement, which also forces the prongs 5 into the sides of the cork.
The device is thus firmly locked in place and it becomes impossible to remove the cork from the bottle without the use of both hands to disengage the ends 3, which can not fail to call attention to the fact that the bottle is sealed in an unusual manner, which means it contains poison.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a bottle closure of the character described, a band, having recessed ends adapted to engage the neck of the bottle below the mouth thereof, and oppositely bent catches 011 the said ends adapted to be brought into engagement for holding the device in place.
2. In a bottle closure of the character stated, a band, spurs integral therewith adapted to engage the stopper of a bottle, the end portions of said band being adapted to engage the neck of a bottle, and opposite catch members on the terminals of said portions adapted for engagement to retain the closure in position on said neck.
3. A bottle closure of the character stated composed of a band having recessed ends,
band between the ends thereof for engage ment with the stopper of the bottle.
4. A bottle closure of the character stated composed of a band having end portions adapted to engage the neck of a bottle, opposite catch members adapted for engagement to retain the closure in position on said neck, and prongs on the band adapted to engage the stopper of the bottle, said band With its catches and prongs being of integral construction.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my slgnature 1n presence of two wltnesses.
JOHN FRANKLIN MAoIN DOE.
