Description

G. W. PACKARD.
DOOR SEGURER. APPLICATION FILED MABMIZ, 1910.
Patented J an. 17, 1911,
ATTOR/VE Y 8 movably GEORGE W. PACKARD, F DEADWOOD, SOUTH DAKOTA.
DOOR-'SEGURER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
Application filed March 12, 1910. Serial No. 548,766.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PACKARD a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Deadwood, in the county of Lawrence and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Door-Securer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
An object of my invention is to provide door securer for insertion between a closure and the frame thereof, and adapted to rehold the closure in a locked position.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a gripping bar for insertion between a closure and the frame thereof, with gripping means on the gripping bar, a locking bar mounted to slide on the gripping bar, and means on the locking bar and removably engaging the gripping bar to removably hold the closure in a locked position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a partial horizontal section of my door securer, showing the same applied to a closure, the dotted lines indicating the initial position of the locking member; Fig. 2 is a side view showing my device applied to the frame of a closure; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of my device.
Referring more particularly to the figures, I provide a gripping bar 1 provided with a hook-shaped lug 2 adapted to engage the strike 3 of a door jamb at. A series of serrations 5 are preferably formed on the gripping bar 1, and mounted to slide horizontally on the gripping bar is a locking bar 6, having :1. lug 7 adapted to engage a door 8, as shown in Fig. 1. Mounted on the locking bar 8 is a cam member 9 provided with a handle 10 and having a serrated peripheral surface 11, adapted to engage the serrations 5 of the gripping member 1 when the handle 10 is moved, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. For the purpose of providing my device for use on closures where the space between the closure and the frame varies in width, a
hook-shaped lug 12 is provided on the other end of the gripping bar 1, and a lug 13 is provided at the other end of the locking plate 6. By referring to Fig. 1, it Wlll be seen that although the lugs 7 and 13 are similar, the hook-shaped lug 12 is a trifle larger than the lug 2, this construction being preferred for the purpose hereinbefore mentioned.
To apply my device the door is first opened, and the lug 2 or 12, depending entirely upon the width of the space between the door and door jamb when the door is closed, is inserted in the door jamb to engage the strike, as will be clearly discerned by referring to Fig. 1. The locking member 6 is then slid along on the gripping member 1 until the lug 7 engages the door 8, as shown, and the handle 10 is then operated to engage the serrated cam with the serrations of the gripping bar 1, thus securely locking the gripping and locking bars and holding the door in locked position with respect to the door jamb.
In Fig. 3, a modified form of my device is shown. In this construction there are two combination gripping and locking bars let and 15, mounted to slide horizontally upon one another, and inclosed by a slidable casing 16, provided with a handled cam 17, similar to the handled cam heretofore described. 1V hen the hook 18 is used as the gripping member, the hook 19 is the locking member, and when the hook 20'is used as the gripping member, the hook 21 is the locking member. The sizes of the hooks 18 and 20 can be conveniently varied, so that my device can be employed on closures having a greater.
or less space between the closure and the frame thereof.
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the construction shown, the scope of my invention being fully defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A door securer comprising a gripping plate for insertion between a closure and the frame thereof, curved hooks on the ends of the gripping plate, a locking plate on which In testimony whereof I have signed my the gripping plate is adapted to slide, lugs name to thisspecification in the presence of on the locking plate extending at right tWo subscribing Witnesses.
angles thereto and in an opposite direction to the hooks in the gripping plate, and means for looking the locking plate to the gripping plate.
GEORGE W. PACKARD. Witnesses:
