Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY R. ROMBERGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Seals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved method of sealing locks, preferably, though not necessarily, of the type used on cars, obviating the use of a soldering or heating iron, and yet employing a sealing strip of tin or other suitable metal in a manner to effectually seal the lock, thus permitting opening of the lock only by destruction of the seal. In this invention the seal is applied upon the lock of a car generally without the use of a sealing tool, the device be ing so constructed as to admit of a permanent connection of the ends of the strip to one another by hand.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front face view of a conventional form of car look in locked position with a seal embodying the principles of my invention attached thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sealing strip. Fig. 3 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 4: is an edge view of the sealing strip when in sealing position. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section taken on line 55 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a sectional detail showing the members illustrated in Fig. 5 engaged with one another. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the female engaging member of the sealing strip.
As shown in the drawings: the door 1, of a car 2, both of which are only shown fragmentarily, is, as shown in Fig. 1, provided with a conventional form of car lock, which consists of a base plate 3, provided with an outstanding lug 4, on the endof which is a pivoted retaining member 5, having an eye 6, at one end thereof. A staple 7, 1s secured in the door 1, and engaged thereon is a hasp 8, adapted to engage over the lug 4:, after which said pivoted member 5, is moved into the position shown in Fig. 1, to retain said hasp on the stationary por tion of the lock secured to the wall of the car. Another eye 9, is formed on the lower portion of said base plate 3, and the lock is sealed by means of a strip of tin or other suitable metal 10, or other desirable material, the same being looped through said respective eyes 6 and 9, with the ends of the strip permanently secured together. For this purpose fastening or attaching means are associated with said strip of metal near one end thereof, embracing a female member 11, which is at the extreme end of the strip, and a male member 12, slightly removed therefrom, and the other end of said strip is provided with a hole or aperture 13, sufficient in size to engage over said male member 12. The device as used is inserted through the respective eyes 6 and 9, of the car look, and the apertured end of said strip is then inserted over the male member 12, after which the female member 11, is engaged thereover by bending the portion of the metal strip between said male and female members, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 6. The fingers of the operator are used to force said female member tightly upon said male member, thus permanently attaching the ends of the strip together, so that the looped seal may not be removed froin the lock except by destruction of said sea In the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, the male member 12 is provided with a rounded headhaving an angular under-shoulder 12 and the female member comprises a cylindrical body portion 11 flared outwardly at l1 near one end and recessed beneath said flare to receive the strip 10, the portion 11 protruding to the other side of said strip being upset firmly to engage said strip. Disposed within the cylindrical portion 11 is a member 14 having one edge flared at 14 to engage in the interior recess formed by the flared portion 11 of the member, 11, and having its other end slotted at 11 and inturned at 11 to form engaging elements with the shoulder 12* of the male member 12, whereby the two may be locked to one another permanently.
The operation of the device is thought to be obvious from the description.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described, a strip of metal, a male member comprising a flanged head attached thereto, and a female member comprising a cylindrical body head of the male member when the two are brought into engagement by pressure.
