BAG-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 16, 1909.
Patented Apr. 19, 1910.
serial No. 478,247.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY VANDERWERP, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Traverse City, in the county of Grand Traverse and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bag fasteners; and its object is to .provide the device with various new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My device consists essentially of a case, a clamp havingan arm at each end extending within the case said clamp adapted to engage and securely hold the open end of a bag; and locking mechanism to hold the clamp in closed position, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l. is an elevation of a device embodying my invention shown in locked position; and Fig. 2. the same with the face plate of the case removed.
Like numbers refer to like parts in both figures.
l represents the case of the device having any convenient form and dimensions, the form shown being a thin rectangular case; 2 is a clamp extending outside of the case across one side of the same, and provided with spurs 3 to penetrate a bag and thus securely hold the same between the clamp and case. This clamp has parallel arms 4 one at each end slidable within the case and provided with interlocking shoulders 5 at their inner ends to interlock with the respective ends of a lock bolt 6 operated by any convenient locking mechanism 7, to secure and release the clamp. On the bolt 6 and reciprocated thereby is a spring pawl 8 which is adapted to engage one of the wheels of an indicating mechanism.
18 are pins which operate to limit the outward movement of the clamp to the position indicated in broken lines in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing description the operation of my device will be readily understood. By opening the device as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 2, a bag can be inserted between the clamp and case and by closing the clamp, as in Fig. l, the teeth 3 will be thrust through the bag and the latter securely held closed by the device.
What I claim is:
l. A bag fastener, comprising opposing clamping members consisting of a case anda clamping bar movable toward and from each other, one of said members being provided with teeth adapted to penetrate and hold a bag and extending into openings in the other member, an arm on each end of the clamping bar slidable in the case, a laterally projecting locking member on each arm, a slidable bolt having a locking member to engage and hold each locking member on the arms, and means for sliding the bolt.
2. A bag fastener, comprising a case, a clamp having teeth projecting into openings in the case, and also having an arm at each end slidable in the case, each arm having a laterally projecting interlocking member, and a slidable bolt having interlocking members projecting oppositely to the members on the arms and adapted to engage and hold the same, and means for slidably Aadjusting the bolt to alternately secure and release the arms.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY VANDERWERP.
