JAR FASTENING.
(No Model.)
No. 305,637. Patented Sept. 23, 1884.
lllllilllllllll WITNESSES .NITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
JACOB Y. SIGAFUS, OF STROUDSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
JAR-FASTENING.
:TJIECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,637, dated September 23, 1884.
Application filed July 12, 1884. (No model.)
To all'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB Y. SIGAFUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Strouds burg, in the county of Monroe and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Jar-Fastenings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to .the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings isa representation 7 of this invention, and is a perspective view.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and shows the jar broken away at the lower end.
This invention has relation to jars for preserving fruit and vegetables; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates'the body of the jar, which is formed without a neck, and with a large mouth 'or opening. The lip B of the mouth is-in this manner brought in vertical line with the side wall, 0, so that the entire strength of the latter is utilized in sustainingthe pressure of the cover D,which is of equal diameter to the jar. The cover is formed with a flange, e, which engages an annular external shoulder, 9, made on the lip B, a suitable rubber ring or gasket being usually interposed. In each side of the jar, near the shoulder g, is made a horizontal groove, h, the bottom is of which is straight, or nearly so, and the depth of which at its mid dle portion is about equal to that of the lipshoulder 9, so that the strength of the side wall of the jar from the toplof the lip B downward will not be materially lessened.
V represents the metallic bracket-clamp, having the arms on terminating in broad inwardly-turned catch-lugs z,which are adapted to engage the opposite side grooves, h, when the bracketclamp is moved over the cover. The clamp is provided with aset screw, S, which is designed to bear on the cover, engaging a central. depression, 1), therein.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The preserving jar A, formeduvithout a neck, and having its shouldered lip in vertical line with its side wall, and below the shoulder the opposite horizontal grooves it, having straight bottoms 7c, in combination with a flanged cover of equal diameter to the jar, and a bracketclanip, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. Y. SIGAFUS.
