Description

' J. CHURCH.
BUNGH. No. 275,588. Patented Apr. 10,1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES CHURCH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BIUNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,588, dated April 10, 1883.
Application filed August 8, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES CHURCH, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to vent-bun gs for barrels and the like, and has for its object to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficient bung that can be readily withdrawn.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved bung; Fig. 2, a transverse sectional view thereof in position, showing the cant-hook in position for removing the bung; Fig. 3, a top view of the bung; Fig. 4, a bottom view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the bung, which may be constructed of rubber, wood, or other suitable material, with bevel edges B, central perforation, O, and a transverse downwardly-curved groove or concavity, D, in its upper face.
E is a bar'or bolt having a cross-bar, F, at one end, which is adapted to be received into concavity D. BoltE passes through opening (J, and is provided on its inner projecting screw-threaded end, G, with a nut, H, a metallic washer, I, and elastic washer J, the latter preferably formed of rubber, being interposed in the order named between nut H and the surface of the washer, as shown. The rubber washer J admits of the opening 0 being utilized as a vent, and also acts as a cushion in withdrawing the bung. The out H may be adjusted as desired, and, owing to the concave shape of groove D, an opening, K, is formed between the outer edge of the bung and central. opening, 0.
To withdraw the hung, the ends and M of the cant-hook N are adjusted in the openings 5 vcurved end P, on the barrel or cask, when, by
pressing on its handle Q, the bung is removed.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficient and easily manipulated.
I claim as new- 1. The combination, with a hung having a transverse groove on its outer face and a central perforation, of a bolt having at one end a transverse bar adapted to be received into said groove without closing it, and at its inner end a nut and elastic washer or cushion, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a bung having a transverse concave groove on its outer face and a central perforation, of a bolt having at its end a fiat cross-bar adapted to be received into said groove, so that an opening is left between the outer edge of the bung and the central perforation, as set forth.
3. The combination of the bung having a transverse top groove or concavity, beveled periphery, and a central perforation, a bolt having atone end a transverse bar and at the other a nut, and an interposed metallic washer and elastic cushion, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
