To all whom, it may concern.

Be it known that I, LoUIs BALSAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps, of

' which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to caps, particularly to yachting-caps, automobile-caps, or caps provided with vizors.

It has for its object to provide as a permanent fixture for a cap an eye-protector of transparent material attached to the vizor by a bellows connection, whereby the rear edge of the protector may be pulled down to bring said protector over the nose and in front of the eyes to prevent dust and other foreign substances from getting in the eyes and may be pushed up again under the vizor without the necessity for removing the cap.

It has for a further object to provide means for securing the protector in its position pushed up under the vizor and for limiting its pulled-down osition.

It has for a still further object to provide a device of the character set forth embodying advantages in point of general utility, ease and convenience of operation, and simplicity and ineXpensiveness of construction.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the cap in place on the head of a person and showing the protector pulled down in front of the eyes. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the cap, showing the protector pushed up under the vizor. Fig. 3 is a side view of the cap, partly broken away and showing the protector in its pushed-up position.

In all the figures of the drawings illustrating my invention like reference characters indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates body of the cap having a strap 2 at the front and a sweat-band 3 in the interior, 2 the top, which is made full so as to fall down over the top edge of the body, and 3 the vizor, all of which parts being old need not be further de scribed.

I will now proceed to describe my invention in connection with the drawings, said invention consisting of a suitably-shaped protector 5 of transparent material having a bellows connection with the vizor by means of a piece of fabric 6, or other suitable material, creased at 7 and folded upon itself, one edge being connected to the front edge of the protector by a line of stitching 9 and the other edge being connected to the front edge of the vizor by a line of stitching 8. Means is pro vided for securing the protector in its pushed up position or limiting its pulled-down position, consisting of a cord 10, one end of which is connected to the eye 11 in one end of the protector, passed through an eye 11 in the fabric, passed through an eye 12 in the end of the vizor corresponding in position to the end of the protector having the eye 1 1, run around the front of the body, passed through an eye 13 in the other end of the vizor, passed through an eye 13 in the fabric, and finally connected to the eye 14 in the end of the protector corresponding in position to the end of the vizor having the eye 13. The cord is looped over thebuttons at the ends of the strap 2 to secure the shield in its pushed up position and disengaged to allow the shield to be pulled down ready for use to its position over the eyes. By connecting the protector in the manner set forth it can be easily and readily lowered without removing the cap by simply pulling down on the inner edge and expanding the folds of the bellows connection and can with equal facility be raised without removing the cap by simply pushing up on the protector and contracting the folds of the bellows connection.

I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details and arrangements of parts shown and described, but reserve the right to all modifications within the scope of my invention.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a cap, the combination with the vizor, of an eye-protector of transparent material and a bellows connection between the front edge of said vizor and the front edge of said protector, whereby the protector is adapted to be pulled down from the rear, substantially as described.

2. In a cap, the combination with the vizor, of an eye-protector of transparent material,

. a bellows connection between the front edge of said vizor and the front edge of said protector, whereby the protector is adapted to be pulled down from the rear, and means for limiting the downward movement of the protector, substantially as described.

3. In a cap, the combinatlon with the vizor,

of an eye-protector of transparent material and a bellows connection between the vizor and protector consisting of a folded strip of flexible material one edge secured along the front edge of the vizor and the other edge secured along the front edge of the protector, whereby the protector is adapted to be pulled down from the rear, substantially as described.

4. In a cap, the combination with the vizor, of an eye-protector of transparent material, a bellows connection between the vizor and protector consisting of a folded strip of flexible material one edge secured along the front edge of the Vizor and the other edge secured along the front edge of the protector, where by the protector is adapted to be pulled down from the rear, and means for limiting the downward movement of the protector and for securing it in raised position, substantially as described.

5. In a cap, the combination with the Vizor, having a hole at each end, of an eye-pr0tector, a bellows connection between the Vizor and protector and a cord running round the front of the cap, passing through the holes in the Vizor and Its ends secured to the ends of the protector, whereby the downward movement of the protector is limited and it may be secured in raised position, substantially as described.
