Lette-rs Patent No.v81,041, dated August 11, 1868.
IMPROVED HARNESS-TREE.
tite Stlgrbule mmh it in lgese @anni ntent mit milling putt mi tige 5min.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
-Be it known that I, JOHN H. Wiussmionn, in the city of Mansfield, county of Richland, State of Ohio, haveinventcd a new, and improved Harness-Tree; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
lexact description ofthe construction of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is afperspeetive view. Figure-'2"is'an exterior or plan view. Figure 3 is an interior or under side View. Figure 4 is a. sectional view through the centre of the tree.
The nature of my invention consists in forming a harnesstrce, of either castor malleable iron, when the same has a. raised flange or lip arranged around its inner edges or sides for the reception of the pad, said flange or lip being provided with a bearing-plate, and extending su'iciently far beyond the 'upper frame to afford a suitable groove or recess for the introduction of the tug-straps.
The tree thus formed can be rendered most durable, as well as highly ornamental, by covering the same with silver-plate, or subjecting it to the well-known japanning process. This will add little or nothing to the cost of the tree, and, as it obviates entirely the necessity o? covering the same with leather, a beautiful and serviceable article is produced at less cost than according to' any of the plans or methods now generally'used.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill now proceed to describe its constructionand operation.
i A. is ,the top or frame of the tree, and is provided on its under side with lips or iianges, a a. Between these lips Yer flanges a a is formed the groove a. Within this groeven is fastened, by any suitable means, theA ordinaryy harness-tree'pad.
The lips or flanges a a' extend a short distance beyondthe surface of the top or frame A, and havey a bearingplate, attached to their under sides.
This plate b extends a short distance beyond the end of the top or frame A, thus leaving an opening, c, throughwhich passes th'e tug-strap. i
The tug-strap has its bearing in the exterior groove or recess li b formed by flanges on the plate b.
The top or frame A is cast or formed with numerous holes, cl d, throughwhich pass the terrein-rings, and also the necessary screw-shanks or other screw-bolts used in securing thepad and tngsstrap to theframe A.
The entire tree, with its grooves or openings, lips or flanges, is formed of' cast or malleable iron, and in one piece.
The top or frame, and side lips or flanges can be japanned or covered with silver-plate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isl The harness-tree A and plate b, when the same are provided witl 1 lips or flanges, and so combined and arranged as to fermthc opening e, and a continuons lgroove, a b, for the pad and tug-strap, said groove extending in both directionsibeyond the plate of the tree, as described, and for the purpose specified.
JOHN H. WHSSEMORE.
