TO LL WHOM IT MAY CONCERTI: v
Be it known that I, JOHN McCOY, of the city of Philzidelphiu, in th'c Stute ofPennsylvanie, louve-invented n new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Sheet-Metul Cool- Hoda and I do herebydeelme that the i following is a full, clear, und exact description ofthe construction of the same, referenceibeing had to the accompanying drmvings, making a, part ofthis specification, in which- Figure 1*'s a. side elevation of a. coul-had huving my improvement applied thereto and Figure 2 n vertical section of partv of fig.. 1 l
Like letters ni' reference indicating the same purts when in both figures, Acoul-hod manufactured of plein sheet iron, soon rusts through Aut the juncture of the body und the bottom,
i while those manufactured entirely of galvanized or Azinckedsheet iron, though'not liable to this objection, are i much more costly, vand the objectief my impro-vement is to produce n shect-metul coal-had having the durability of the latter, with but afsmoll increase over. the cost of the former. l
My invention consists in making the bottom, und the lower pal-tof the body ofy the had, of galvunized oi"Y zvincked sheet iron, substantially as hereinafter described.'
In the drawings, A B is the body of the hed; C D the foot, and E therbottoui. About one-third oi` the depth of the bcdyof the hod, I make-of gulvuniz'ed or zincked sheet iron', uniting the latter und the upper port A,
(which -is of plain sheet iron,) together by n double lap, en.` llho bottoni E; I also make of galvanized or t 'zincked sheet iron, uniting its edge und the louer edge ci' Btogether byu' double lap, b', (see tig. 2.)4 I then construct the foot C D in the usual manner, of plain sheet .iron, and attech'it tov the'outer side of the'lover end ofvB, by means of rivets ol d passing through both, a's heretofore, substantially usfshown inthedrcivings.
-By this mode of manufacturing sheet-metal .coul-hods, I produce an Yurticle as dui-sible asthose made i entirely of the galvanized or zincked iron, and at o cost but little over those inode entirely of theplciiri'4 sheet' i iron.
Havingfthus fully described my improvement, tvhalt I claim as newQanddes-ix-e tclsecure by Letters Patent,
i S'cO'nfined to the following, viz:-
I claim manufacturing sheet-metal coal-hods, 'by making the foot C D, und the upper partvA'of-the body,v
of plain sheet iron, und the bottom E, 'und the Vlowcnpsw't B ofthe body, ofgulvauiized or zincked sheet iron, i
substantially'as and for .the purpose described. 4 y y.
