Description

'Quite tsts @strut Lft'rr.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUPAGTURE F PEPPER-BOXES.
@lgs Stlgcule nfcrnt tu it tlgist ilcitas liitntt mit matting nut nt tlg@ stmt,
T() ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that l, JOHN l-I. STONE, otthe city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented .a new and useful Improvement in the Sheet-Metal Pepper or Dredging-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, making a part of this specification, in which- 'Figure l is a central vertical section of a sheet-metal pepper-box, having my said improvement applied thereto. l
Figure 2, a horizontal section, showing the lower end of the body of the box; and
Figure 3 is a plane viewot' the bottom of the same, detached- Like letters of reference indicating the same parts when in the different figures.
The purpose of my improvement is to flessen the cost of manufacturing sheet-metal pepper or dredgingv boxes, having lined tops and detachable bottoms; and my invention consists Vin the peculiar construction hereinafter described and set forth, whereby the bottoms of said boxes are rendered attachable and detachabie as occasion may require. v
In the drawings, A is the body of the box, and B its detachable'bottom. The body A is made o tin-plete, in the usual cylindrical form, and soldered along the seam or Ijoint, having its perforated convex top, ai, of the same metal fastened thereon permanently by overlapping its edge in a well-known manner, (see iig. 1.) 1t has also two projections, a2 a2, left on opposite sides ot' its lower edge, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. The bottom B consists of a disk, of the same sheet metal, stamped or formed up" by means of appropriate dies, substantially in the form shown in figs. 1 and 3, In* being an inclined tia-nge or rim thereon, which forms a broad, substantial base for supporting the body Ain an upright-position, and b2 a( rvertically raisedy portion,v which easily its into the lower end ot' Aand thus closes it, (see tig. Through each of two opposite sides orr portions of the said inclined iiange bilan angular cut is`, at the same time, made by the dies, and the thus detached angular portions ont' the sheet metal at the same time raised .upward sutliciently thereby to produce the two sloping catches b3 b3, (see iig. Now, when the bottom B is inserted into the lower end of the body Afand then turned around therein until the two projections a2 a2on the body are respectively wedged beneath the two catches b3 b3 ofthe bottom B, it will be readily seen that the said catches b3 b3 will clamp down the projections a? a2, and thus securely hold the bottom B fast to the body A, and that, by a contrary motion given tothe bottom, the two parts A and B will become detached.
This is an exceedingly simple andl effective mode of securing a detachable bottom to a pepper or dredgingbox, and costs less in its production than'any other mode heretofore known or used. 1t renders the bottom perfectly secure against an accidental detachment, and at the same time readily allows of its being quickly detached when a replenishment of the box requires it.
Having thus fully described my improvement, what I claim as new therein of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is confined to the following` viz: n
I claim a sheet-metal pepper orv dredging-box, havingits bottom, B, detachably secured to its body, A, by means of the projections a2 a2 left on the body, and the angular catches b3 b3 formed on the bottom, the same being arranged to operate together substantially as and for the purpose described.
