Description

VILLIAMJJJOHNS'ION, OFAPPLETON, WISCONSIN.
Letters Patent No. 84,949, dated December l5, 1868.
IMPROVED BEDSTEAD-PASTENING.
The Schedule referred to :in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may conce/rn:
Be it known that I, AWILLIAM JoiINs'roN, of Appleton, in the county of Outagamie, and State of hVisconsin, have invented a new and improved BedsteadeFastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to Ina-ke and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of'this specification, in whichhigure l is a side View of a part of a side-rail and post of a bedstead, to which my improved fastening has been attached.
Figure 2 is 'a detail sectionalview ot' the post, showing'one/part of the fastener attached thereto.
Figure 3 is a detail side view of the end ofthe siderail, showhig the other part of the fastener attached thereto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish animproved bcdstezul-fastening,strong, dura-ble, simple in wonstruetion, not liable to get out of order, and which may be easily attached and detached; and
ltconsists in the fastening constructed and operating as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the post ofthe bedstead, and
B represents the side-rail, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new.
C is one part of the fastening, which is let into a recess fornied in the post A to receive it, where it is secured in place by a pin, screw, or bolt, passing through said post and through a hole in .said piece 0.
cl isa lug, formed upon the lower part of the piece (l, so as to leave a wedge-shaped recess upon the rear or inner side of said lug, as shown in figs. 1 and 2.
Upon the upper part ofthe piece C is formed a second lug, c, in suoli a way as to leave a space or channel upon its upper end and inner side, as shown in g. 2.
D is the other part or piece of the fastening, which is made in about the shape of the letter D, and which is iitted into a recess formed in the inner side of the end ofthe rail in the usual manner.
The piece D is so arranged that its straight side may project beyond the end of the rail B, as shown in iig. 3.
Upon the lower part of the projecting part of the piece D is formed a lug, d', iitting into the recessrin the rear of the lower lug cI of the piece (l, as shown in dotted lines in fig. l.
Upon the upper part of the projecting part of the piece Dis formed a second lug, d2, of' such a form that it can enter the space or channel above and in the rear ofthe lug c'z of the piece C, and rest against the rear side of said lug c, as shown in dotted lines in ig. l.
In attaching the fastener, the lower lug d of the piece D is entered in the space between the lugs c1 and c'z of the piece C, and the upper lug di is entered in the space above the lug c2.
Then, by pushing the piece D inward and downward, the lugs d* and d pass inte their places in the rear of the lugs c and l?, securely fastening the said parts or pieces together.
lThe fastener is un'astened by simply raising the piece D7 the form of the channel or space in the rear of and above the lug c2 causing the piece D, at the same time, to move outward.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved bedstead-fastener, C c1 c2 D ll* d2, constructed Iand operating substantially in Vthe manner ,herein shown and described.
l WILLIAM l JOHNSTON.
