Description

T. n. STEWART,
OF WETHERSFlELD, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 71,241, dated Noofmzvber 19, 1867; 'reissue No. 3,243, dated December 0" IMPROVED RAILROAD-CAR-AXLE BOX.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
. had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.`
In the drawings- Figure I is a sectional View of my improvement, and
Figures II and III, detailed views ot parts ol' the same.
The object of my improvement is to save the journals and boxes of ear-axles'as much as possible from wear, by preventing,r the dirt and dust outside from getting; into the boxes and grinding between the bearings. l aceo1nplish-this by a peculiar' brm otbox and car-wheel, which I will now describe.
Upon the side ofthe box A next the wheel is formed a cylindrical projection, B, having a flange, u', at its edge. This fits into a similar-tubular projection, O, upon the wheel D, which also has a Range, b, upon its edge, this Mange b, however, projecting toward the centre, whihthe one, a, on the tube B, radiates. The outside surlhce of the tube B is elliptical in shape, for a purpose hereafter described, so that a point on cach side, at c e', is flush with the outside odge of the flange a. lt will be seen in Fig. I that dust would have to pass around a very circuitous rollte before it could penetrate iu far enough to reach the bearings of the journal.
he saddles of the bearing, I construct 1n a peculiar manner, sothat they are easly adj usted in the boxes,
' and when two or more are fitted together, they form a solid healing.
In Fig. II is shown `an end vicw of the journal E and the saddles ff, with the box A.
The saddles f j' aie 'ormedjn the shape of crscentsv having their ont-side surfaces of the same circular planes as their inside, so that they fit compaetly one upon another.
In order to'seenro them from sliwinr umn each outside sin-theo, at the top, are tenons y g g, &c., which llt into corresponding' cavities .It h h, Sie., on the inside surface. A
.'lfhese tenons g g g prevent also the whole combined saddhl from moving in tho box, :is cavities may be sunk in the top ot the samcfbr the upper outside tenons to lit into. l
In Fig. I the centre tcnon'isshown fitting inlo a Acavity, 7., while the two cud ones forni rests on cach side of the socket G having thol cavity.
The tubcfB isfbrmcd elliptical, in order to allow the same to be moved up in the tube G when the-saddles are heilig adjusted above the journal.
By means of this-.device l obtain a conlplotely-protected box, no dust being,` allowed to enter, thereby saving much wear to bot-h journal and saddles, while the latter, by their construction, are more pei-lect ol' .pcration and wear.
Now, having described my invention,
Whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination and arrangement ot' the oblong` their inner surfaces arranwvd suhst-antiall f as shown.
