CHARLES A. WILSON AND WILLIAM R. DUNLAP, OF CINCINNATI, CHIC.
Letters Patenti-Vo. 82,670, dated September 29, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT 1N PMPS.
To wHoM 1T iiAY oo NcERN:
Be it known that we, `CHARLES A. WILSON and WILLIAM R'. DUNLAP, both ofCincinnati, Hamilton county,
Ohio, have invented a new and useful Valve for Pumps; and we hereby dec/lare the following to`be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, makingipart of this specification.
Our invention relates to a construction of valve for pumps which combines the advantages of large effective water-way with great mobility and ease of operation.
Figure 1 is an-axial section through avalve embodying our invention, the same being in its open condition. Figure 2 is a perspective view of one ofthe sections of our valve. Our'valve is composed ofa stack or verticalV series of hollow annular sections, A. B C D, level on top, and
traversed by numerous equidistant ports or passages, u 6 c d, of which the ports b c d communicate withltheV common interior of the valve, while the lower ones, a, o'pen directly into the suction-pipe of the pump.
Seoured'by its inner edge, and resting upon the perforate top of each section, is an annular Hap, E, of India rubber, or leather, or other pliable and impervious material.
' Each section, except the lowest one, slopes inward on its underside, and serves at this part as a stop to limit the ascent of the ilap belowin the open condition of the latter. l
To preventthe flap sticking fast to the under side of its superincumbent section, we furnish said under sidev with protuberances, F, against which the il'ap impinges when elevated.
vAbove the uppermost section is an annular angex G, which curvesupward and outward in the manner shown, so as to serve as ajstop to the lap beneath it. Within the circuit of this flange, G, and closing'the uppermost section, is a plate, H, having ports, k, guarded by a ap, E', which ap is restricted in its ascent by means of an annular flange, G.
The danges G and G may be traversed by perforations having the same otlice as have the plotuberan'ces F. The flange G and plate I-I are preferably cast in one piece, as here represented.
The entire stack of seats is fastened together by bolts I and nuts J, so as to be readily detached for inspection or repair of any part. The bolts I traverse a bridge-piece, K, which is cast with the lower section-A. It will be seen that the inclining inward of each section, on the under side thereof, enables each to be of equal area to any, and affords facility for an aggregate area of ports of fully equal capacity to that pf the Vsuction-pipe.
We claim herein as new, and otiour invention- 1 A 1. II'he combination of the annular valve-seats a b c d and annular valves E; when arranged in a Vertical series, one above another, and constructed 'as herein described, so as to act simultaneously around the entirecircumference. l
2. I'n combination with the sections-A C D, with their described ilexible flaps, we claim-the annular stops or flanges G G.
3. The protuberances F on the under side of the sections B C D, for the purpose explained. In testimony of which invention, we hereunto set our hands. Y CHARLES A. WILSON. WILLIAM R.' DUNLAP.
