Beit known that we, FnEDnnK BAUSCHTLEKER and BARNET VANFLEET, of the city and county of Washington, and District of Columbia, have invented a ne\v and improved" Pump; and 4we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,lforming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention through the line a: m of tig. 2.

This invention consists in a new valvewhich clears itself of gravel and other obstructions, and a new box which works more easily and with less liability to injury than those hitherto in use.

The particular difficulties which my invention Ais designed to obviate are those already referred to, viz, the liability ofthe valves to become obstructed, and therebyinjured and sometimes entirely destroyed, and the fact that in packing the boxes `to prevent the escape of air between them and the walls of the pump, they have to be made in general with air-bands or grooves around their periphery, into which the gravel frequently works, interfering with the operation ofthe boxes, and often `causing irremediable injury.4 To obviate these dilheulties we have invented our improved pump.

In order that others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains may be enabled to make and use the same, we will proceed to describe it in detail. i

The periphery of the box we make perfectly smooth, without external air-bands, and grinding it to a perfectly tight joint with the bore of the pump. D D are thepump-valves, the former attached to the box, the latter to the pump A. Each valve is made of two leaves d OZ hinged together along a line running diametrically across them,l seating downward and opening upward. The rod s, upon which the valve-leaves hinge as above described, projects beyond the edges of the valves slightly, as shown at e e, forming arms on each side, which extend into a short vertical groove, zz', in the walls of the box or pump, as may be the case. This gives the whole valve an opportunity to slide up and down in thebox op pump a distance equal to the length of the slots or grooves In the operation ofthis improved pump three important resultsare attained: First, if by any chance any obstruction should get in under the valve D or D', it will be immediately thrown -out by the operation of the valve, which will give way and allow the obstruction to escape, and then immediately return to its proper position. Secondly, no gravel can lodge and remainbetween the walls of the box and the-pump, for as soon as it has insinuated-itselt` between them it will be drawn into the holes c c c, and discharged into the interior of the box. And, thirdly, as no packing of rubber, &c., is required in a box of this construction, it will be far eheapcr and more durable, besides working more easily than those pumps which are constructed with boxes surrounded by rubber rings, avoiding not only the complication of the parts, but the great friction which always results from the application of rubber packing. p

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The pump-box B, having a smooth exterior, and provided with perforations e c c and internal annular grooves a a a, substantially as and for the purpose specified. i

2. The combination 4of the valve, having the twoleaves and theprojections, with the vertical slots or grooves z'z',.in the interior walls, substantially as and for the purpose described. l
