Be it known that I, HENRY H. BLAYLooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houstonville, in the county of Iredell, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to bedsteads.

One object of the invention is to provide a bedstead embodying such characteristics that it may be readily converted into a single or double bedstead.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a bedstead of the character stated wherein the bottom and the head and foot boards may be readily folded and unfolded for the purpose above stated.

With these and other objects in View the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention in the form of a single bedstead. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with one side unfolded. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section taken at a different point.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates a headboard having a top piece 2 hingedly connected at its upper end in any suitable manner, with its sides provided with wings 3 and 4, the wings 3 and 4 being hingedly connected to the respective sides of the headboard -1 through the instrumentality of suitable hinges 5. It will be observed that the lower end of the headboard is bifurcated, as at 6, to form oppositely-disposed legs 7- and 8 and that each ofthe wings is also bifurcated to form the spaced legs 9 and 10.

The footboard is designated by the reference character 11 and has its lower end bi' furcated to form the spaced legs 12 and 13. The wings 14 and 15 are hingedly connected to the respective sides of the footboard 11 by means of suitable hinges 16, and each wing has its lower end bifurcated to form the spaced legs 17 and 18 for a purpose readily understood.

Rigidly connected in any suitable manner to the inner faces of the head and foot boards intermediate their upper and lower edges is the bed-bottom 19, hingedly connected to the opposite sides of which are the hinged leaves 20 and 21, whereby the bottom of the bedstead may be narrowed or broadened, as may be desired, for the purpose of converting the bedstead into a single or double one.

When the bedstead is to be used in the single form, the hinged leaves 20 and 21 of the bottom 19 are let down to hang vertically or, if desired,-may be folded back against the under face of the bottom 19 and held thereagainst through the instrumentality of suitable clips 22, designed to engage in the corresponding perforations 23 and 24 of the said hingedleaves. At any rate, no matter what the disposition of the hinged leaves 20 and 21 may be when they are let down with respect to the bottom 19 the wings 3 and 4 and '14 and 15 of the head and foot boards, re-

spectively, are turned inwardly against the corresponding edges of the bottom 19 and held thereagainst through the instrumentality of suitable fasteners 25, which are designed to hold the respective wings against the corresponding edges of the bottom 19, as clearly shown in the drawings. Now when it is desired to use the bedstead in the double sense the fasteners 25 are manipulated to permit the respective wings of the head and foot boards to be swung outwardly parallel with the respective boards, when the hinged leaves 20 and 21 may be brought to a plane corresponding to the plane of the bottom 19 with the edges of their corresponding ends in engagement with the inner faces of the corresponding wings, with which they may be connected firmly in any suitable manner, as clearly shown in the accompanying drawings.
