Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed August 7, 1905. Serial No. 272,963.
1'0 all) whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL NAAB, a citizen of ,the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and useful match-safe of the vest-pocket type by means of which matches may be struck without danger of the heads thereof flying off or a particle of fire being projected to the hands or articles of furniture adjacent to the persons using the said box, a further object being to provide a safety apparatus of this kind for use in connection with matchsafes which does not in any way interfere with the operation or use of the box in its usual manner, anda still further object being to provide a match-safe of this type which is simple in construction and operation and well ada ted for the purpose for'which it is inten ed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form'a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters ineach of the views, and in which a Figure 1 is a side view of a pocket matchsafe constructed according to my invention Fig. 2, a section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown a match safe a, comprising the usual body portion 6 and cover or cap 0, hinged thereto, as shown at d,and on one side of the body portion 6 I provide guides e, longitudinally arranged thereon, which are adapted to engage and permit longitudinal movement of a casing f, which is closed at both ends, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and which is preferably provided with a partition f and also with a small aperture f beneath said partition. The manner in which the casing f is engaged by the guides e is clearly shown in Fig. 3, and in Figs. 2 and 3 I have shown the side of the box a within the casing f serrated, as shown at g, or the same may be slightly roughened or may be provided with a coating of any material upon which matches are adapted to be ignited.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have indicated in dotted lines a match passed through the I aperture f and when the match is so placed a rapid longitudinal movement of the casing f in the guides e rubs the head of the match against the roughened surface 9 and the match is thereby ignited and may be at once withdrawn and used, and it will be seen from the construction that no particles of fire can fly from said casing and the hands of the user or his clothes are in no danger of being burned.
InFig's. 1 and 2 of the drawings I have shown a small arm h pivotally mounted on the bottom of the member I) of the matchsafe, and this member I) when in operation is adapted to prevent the casing f from being removed from the match-safe, or various other means may be employed for this purpose at either or both ends of the body portion 1).
My invention is very simple both in construction and operation and is'very inexpensive, and while I have shown my invention applied to a pocket match-safe it will be ob vious that the same may be applied to wallsafes or safes intended to stand on tables or shelves, and various modifications in the man' ner in which the casing f is preferably mounted on the match-safe may be'made, as well as modifications in the said casing, as will be understood, and with this reservation What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i's
1. A match-safe provided with a boxshaped casing which is movable longitudinally of one side thereof, said casing being provided with an aperture and the matchsafe being provided within said casing with a rough surface, substantially as shown and described. I
2. A match-box one side of which is provided with parallel guides, and a box-shaped casing movable in said guides and the inner side of which is 'open, said casing being also provided with an aperture through which a match may be inserted and said box with a rough surface, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 5th day of August, 1905.
KARL NAAB.
