To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LUoIoUs D. BURLING- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Curtain and Shade Hanger, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to attachments to window casings for the suspension of the hangings, curtains, or shades therefrom, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efiiciency, convenience, and utility of devices of this character.

With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

' In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device from the front, and Fig. 2 is a similar view from the rear. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improved device applied.

The improved device comprises a body mem: ber in the form of a wooden strip 10, long enough to extend transversely of the windowcasing (indicated by dotted lines at 11) and provided with longitudinal channels 12 13 in its opposite edges near one end. At the other end of the body member is disposed a bracket 14:, having clips 15 16 extending from one side and embracing the opposite edges of the body member and with an arm 17 extending from the other side and provided with lateral spurs 18 for engaging the casing 11 at one side. The bracket 14 will be attached, as by screws 19, to the body member 10. Slidably disposed upon the body member 10 near the other end, as by clips 20 21, is another bracket 22, having an arm 23, terminating in lateral spurs 24 for engaging the opposite side of the window-casing.

Springs 25 26 are connected, as by screws 27 28, to the member 10 and lie within the channels 12 13 and are connected at their other ends to the bracket 22, and thus exert their force to maintain the bracket yieldably in its inward position, and thus cause it to be automatically adapted to window-casings of different widths. The channels 12 13 thus form guides for the springs and prevent lateral displacement relative to the body member. The bracket 22 is also provided with fingerlugs 29 30 to assist in adjusting the same. By this simple means the body member 10 may be quickly attached to or detached from the easing and without inserting screws or nails therein or otherwise disfiguring or marring the same. I

Slidably disposed upon the body member 10 are brackets 31 32, having clips 33 34. for bearing over the opposite edges of the body member and with terminal sockets 35 36 for receiving the curtain-pole, (indicated at 37 by dotted lines in Fig. 3.) The brackets 31 32 are bent laterally in opposite directions, as shown, to dispose the socket portions 35 36 beyond the casing 11 at each side, so that the curtain may be arranged to entirely cover the casing and conceal the same when required. Set-screws 38 39 are disposed in the clips 33 34 for bearing upon the member 10, and thus provide means for adjusting the curtain-pole brackets longitudinally of the body member.

The bracket members will all be of metal, preferably pressed from steel and as light as possible consistent with the strains to which they will be subjected and may be of any ornamental or fanciful design or configuration and plated or otherwise ornamented and protected from corrosion.

Brackets 4.0 41 of the usual form may be attached to the member 10 to carry the shaderoller and are readily adjustable, so that shaderollers of any length may be employed without reference to the width of the window, thus enabling the shades to be mounted upon the window just as purchased, and thus avoiding the necessity of cutting to fit the window. This is an important advantage, as will be obvious.

The device is simple in construction, easily and quickly attached or detached, and adapted to all the various sizes of window-casings.

They can be inexpensively manufactured and furnished in different sizes as required.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a curtain-hanger, a body member for extending transversely of the window-casing. a bracket having means for attaching to said body member and with a laterally-extending arm at one end terminating in spurs for bearing against the window-casing at one side and with spaced clips at the upper and lower edges for hearing over and beneath said body member, a bracket having a laterally-extending arm at one end terminating in spurs for bearing against the window-casing at the other side and with spaced clips at the upper and lower edges for bearing over and beneath the body member, springs connected to support said last-mentioned bracket yieldably upon said body member, and supporting means for a curtain attached to said body member.

2. In a curtain-hanger, a body member for extending transversely of the window-casing and with longitudinal channels in its upper and lower edges at one end, a bracket having means for attaching to said body member and with a laterally-extending arm at one end terminating in spurs for bearing against the window-casing at one side and with spaced clips at the upper and lower edges for bearing over and beneath said body member, a bracket having a laterally-extending arm at one end terminating in spurs for bearing against the window-casing at the other side and with spaced clips at the upper and lower edges for hearing over and beneath the body member, springs bearing in said channels and supported from lateral movement thereby and connected at one end to said body member and by the other ends to said last-mentioned bracket and holding the same yieldably in contact with said casing and supporting means for a curtain attached to said body member.

3. In a curtain-hanger, a body member for extending transversely of the window-casing, a bracket having clips at one side for engaging the body member and with an arm extending from the other side and provided with lateral spurs for engaging one side of the window-casing, a bracket having clips at one side for slidably engaging said body member and with an arm extending from the other side and provided with lateral spurs for engaging the other side of said window-casing, means for adjusting said slidable bracket longitudinally of said body member, and brackets havingterminal sockets for the curtain-pole and with clips for slidably engaging said body member near the ends, said brackets spaced apart upon said body member and bent to cause the socket portions to extend beyond the window-casing at each side.

4. In a curtain-hanger, a body member for extending transversely of the Window-casing, a bracket having clips at one side for engaging the body member and with an arm extending from the other side and provided with lateral spurs for engaging one side of the Window-casing, a bracket having clips at one side for slidably engaging said body member and with an arm extending from the other side and provided with lateral spurs for engaging the other side of said window-casing, means for adjusting said slidable bracket longitudinally of said body member, brackets having terminal sockets for the curtain-pole and with clips for slidably engaging said body member near the ends, and with set-screws in said clips and bearing upon said body member.
