Be it known that I, DOUGLAS S. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Casselton, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Curtain and Shade Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in combination fixtures for window curtains and shades, and

window frame when the removable parts are detached.

W'ith this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also'to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of one formof my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same; and, Figs. 4 and 5 are detail perspective views of modified forms of brackets, hereinafter specifically described.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

In one embodiment of the invention, the base plate 1 or fixture of the device is adapt ed to be secured permanently to the window frame and is formed with screw holes for this purpose, is provided with two side flanges 2 having beveled corners, and with a spaced bottom or end flange 3 with offset side'edges 4 adapted to form a pocket at the lower end of the base plate. The upper edge of the bottom or end flange 3 is provided with a recess 5 having beveled corners, as shown, and in vertical alinement with the space between the opposing edges of the side flanges 2. This base plate may be obviously formed of sheet metal and this is the preferred arrangement or method of manufacture, the device being formed of one integral piece stamped into suitable blank form and then having, its side flanges and end flanges turned over its outer face to produce the completed device.

The curtain bracket consists of a supporting plate 6 with beveled lower corners, said supporting plate being adapted to be slipped downwardly within the side flanges and have its lower end rest in the pocket formed by the bottom flange 3 and its offset side edges. The supporting plate 6 is formed with a preferably integral laterally extending curved arm 7 which is formed with a cuff at its outer end adapted to hold one end of a curtain pole.

The shade bracket 9 in this embodiment of my invention is provided at its rear edge with two oppositely disposed lateral wings 10, and the bracket is adapted to be slid downwardly into the space between the side flanges 2 with its lower edge resting in the recess 5 and with the wings retained within the said pocket and by the said side flanges. In the manufacture, the bracket 9 may be formed of one piece of sheet metal or similar material that may be stamped out and subsequently bent or doubled upon itself to form the outwardly projecting portion of the bracket and then bent at its extremities in opposite directions to form the wings 10.

Obviously, a pair of devices as above described are used to form combined supports for a curtain and a shade, said supports merely differing, as is common, in the form of slot or opening to receive the gudgeons of the shade roller.

In the modification illustrated in Fig. 4, the shade bracket 9'? is formed as the integral extension of one of, the side flanges 2 of the base plate'l which is also formed with the bottom or end flange 3 In this construction, it is to be understood that the same curtain bracket may be used by being slipped downwardly so as to secure it to the base plate 1 in an evident manner, and it is to be noted that by this construction, a separate or distinct piece as a base plate is dispensed with, but with the disadvantage that in this modified form, the curtain bracket 'alone is removable and the shade bracket is part of the base plate or fixture and is adapted to be permanently secured to the window and project out somewhat therefrom, while in the form' or embodiment first described, both the curtain bracket and shade bracket are removable thereby leaving asubstanti ally flat fixture 011 the window frame which will be inconspicuous and in no sense in the way.

As a further modification illustrated in Fig. 5, the shade bracket 9 is provided with only one wing, designated 10 which is formed preferably as an integral lateral extension of the rear edge, and is also formed with the bottom. lug 11 projecting in a direction opposite to the said wing. 1n this form 1 designates the base plate which is provided with two side flanges 2 and a bottom or end flange 3 One of the two side flanges 2 is provided with an outwardly extending extremity which constitutes a wing adapted to extend alongside of the shade bracket 9* when the'parts are in assembled relation. In this form also the same curtain bracket may be used as in the other forms above de scribed.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple combination fixture of which the parts are readily detachable, one from the other and which may be cheaply manufactured and durable and effective in holding a curtain and a shade by practically the same devices.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A device of the character described, consisting of a base plate adapted to be secured to a window frame and provided with integral side flanges and a lower bent edge constituting a bottom flange, a curtain bracket provided with a supporting plate adapted to'be slid behind said flanges, and a shade bracket formed with laterally extending wings adapted to be slid behind the side flanges and arranged to project forwardly from between the same.

2. A device of the character described, consisting of a base plate provided with two side flanges and having its lower edge bent to form a bottom flange, a shade bracket secured to said base plate, and a curtain ranged to project out through the space between the side flanges of the base plate.

4. A device of the character described, comprising a base plate provided with two spaced side flanges and a bottom flange formed in its upper edge with a recess, a shade bracket adapted to be slid downwardly in the space between the side flanges with its lower edge resting in said recess, said shade bracket being provided with wings adapted to extend back of said flanges to retain the bracket in place, and a curtain bracket pro-.

5. A device of the character described, consisting of a base plate provided with spaced side flanges and a bottom flange formed in its upper edge with a recess and a shade bracket adapted to project out through the space between said side flanges with its lower end resting in said recess, said bracket being formed with oppositely disposed wings adapted to-extend back of said flanges, whereby to retain the bracket in place.

6. A device of the character described, comprising a base provided with two spaced side flanges and a bottom flange formed with oflset side edges and a recess in its upper edge and a shade bracket adapted to project through the space between the said flanges with its lower end resting in said recess, said bracket being formed with oppositely extending wings arranged for location back oi. said. flanges, whereby to retain the bracket in place.
