Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1911.
Application filed August 20, 1910. Serial No. 578,150.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER B. DAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Shade-Brackets and Hanger-Arms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined shade bracket and hanger which is adapted for hanging curtains, shades and curtain poles of difi'erent sorts, combined with a hanger arm from which bird cages and similar articles can be suspended.
The device is adapted to be made from sheet metal and to form a cheap bracket and one in which the hanger arm is adjustable in its extension from the bracket so that the distance of its end from the wall can be regulated.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a bracket. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hanger arm of the bracket.
The bracket consists of a main portion 10 which is made of sheet metal and has a right-angled leaf thereon, preferably integral therewith, which is provided with the holes 13 through which the fastening elements, such as screws or nails, can be driven. The bracket is provided on its top-edge, near the leaf, with a slot 1 1, or its equivalent, which is adapted to receive one of the ends of a shade roller, as will be evident. The horizontal projecting portion 15 of the bracket, which is integral with and in eX- tension to the body portion 10, is provided with a raised portion 16 and a post 17 on its end, the bracket being formed, between the raised portion 16 and the post 17 into a recess 18 which is adapted to receive a curtain pole in the usual manner of curtain pole brackets, and the post 17, on the end which projects above the raised portion 16, forms a means for receiving such curtain poles as are provided with perforations diametrically arranged through them, which curtain poles are seated by having these holes or perforations placed over posts on the brackets.
To one side of the horizontal portion 15 is a lip 19 which is bent at a slight distance from and parallel to the horizontal portion 15, and in the space between the lip 19 and the horizontal portion 15 is seated the bracket arm 20, which bracket arm, on its inner end, has a lip 21 which in turn cooperates with the bracket arm 20 to receive the horizontal portion 15, and in this way the bracket arm is suspended and it forms a stiff structure for maintaining strains on the end of the bracket arm due to the suspension of elements on the end of the bracket arm. The bracket arm is provided with any suitable form of hook 22 on which the articles that are to be suspended are adapted to be caught.
This device is cheaply made and the sliding adjustment of the bracket arm is easy and quick and there is enough frictional engagement bet-ween the lips of the respective parts and the elements that they clasp to hold the bracket arm against accidental sliding or adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A combined bracket and hanger consisting of a bracket formed of a sheet of metal Having a right=angled leaf on one end, the leaf being perforated for the reception of nails and the like, the bracket having a horizontal portion terminating in a post, a raised portion on the horizontal portion of the bracket adjacent to the post, the bracket having a recess between the raised portion and the post for the reception of a curtain pole, the bodyportion of the bracket being recessed on its top edge near the leaf to receive the end of a shade roller, a lip integral with the horizontal portion of the bracket and near its outer end, the lip projecting from the bracket at the bottom edge, ahanger arm adapted to be seated between the horizontal portion of the bracket and its lip, a lip parallel to and secured to the hanger arm on its inner end and adapted to cooperate with the hanger arm to receive the horizontal portion of the bracket, and means on the outer end of the hanger arm for sus pending an element, the lips being adapted to permit a free sliding movement of the hanger arm on the bracket to its limit of movement, the movement being limited by the lip of the hanger arm engaging the lipcess for the reception of a curtain pole, the
post being adapted to receive a curtain pole of the perforated type, the body portion of the bracket having a slot in its top edge near the leaf for the reception of the end of a shade roller, a lip integral with the horizontal portion of the bracket and bent up from its bottom edge into substantially parallel relation-with the horizontal portion under the raised portion, a hanger arm formed of sheet metal and having a lip integral therewith bent up frbm its bottom edge at its inner end, the hanger arm being adapted to be seated between the horizontal portion of the V bracket and its lip and to embrace the horizontal portion between the hanger arm and its lip, and a hook on the end of the hanger arm, the lips being adapted to permit a free sliding movement of the hanger arm on the bracket to its limit of movement, the move- 7 ment being limited by the lip of the hanger arm engaging the lip on the bracket.
3. A combined bracket and hanger consisting of a bracket formed of a sheet of metal having a right-angled leaf on one end for its attachment to'a support, the bracket having a horizontal portion terminating in an upwardly turned narrow post adapted to receive a curtain-rod of the perforated type, a raised portion on the horizontal portion of the bracket adjacent to the post, the portion between the post and the raised portion be ing recessed for the reception of a curtain pole, the body portion of the bracket being recessed on its top edge to receive the end of a shade-roller, a lip integral with the horizontal portion of the bracket and below the raised portion, the lip extending upwardly from the bottom edge of the bracket and parallel therewith to a point near its top edge, a hanger arm adapted to rest flat against the bracket and between the bracket and its lip, a lip extending from the bottom of the hanger arm at its inner end and eX- tending up parallel with the hanger arm and embracing the bracket, and a hook on the end of the hanger arm for suspending an element.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing,
I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of May 1910.
ELHER B. DAUM.
