BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application led January 14, 1905. Serial No. 241,095.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RoYL A. BROWN, a citizen ofthe UnitedStates, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to buckle construction; and it consists of certain specifiedv combination and arrangement of details, as will be hereinafter clearly pointed out, the main object of my invention, among others, being to provide a buckle of great simplicity and efficiency which may be used in almost every instance Where a buckle is desirable, as upon straps, bands, harness, and upon personal wear of various kinds.
Other objects and advantages Will be fully set forth in the accompanying specification and illustrated in the drawings, of which- Figure l shows a plan view of my buckle complete. Fig. 2 showsaside elevation thereof. Fig. 3 shows a central sectional view with the cooperating strap indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 4 shows aslightly-modified construction. Figs. 5 and 6 show the two members illustrated in Fig. 4 as separated from each other, while Fig. 7 shows another form of buckle. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 7, showing the strap inserted therein.
Referring to the various parts of my invention, 1 indicates the main frame of my buckle, which is rectangular in general outline and is composed of the side bars er and end sections c and d, and the cross-bar 2. Adapted to cooperate with the frame 1 is a member 3', longitudinally movable relative to said frame and held thereon by means of the depending anges 4, which are bent loosely around the side bars a and as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The member 3 consists of the side bars c and f and the end sections 6 Iand 6, the depending flanges 4L being formed contiguously with the side bars @and f. Cooperating with the buckle is a strap, as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, one end 5 of said strap being fastened\to the end section 6,'and the free end of said strap 7 when in use is entered between the bar 2 and, end section d, in which position it will be in the path of the end section 6l` of the movable member 3. It is therefore obvious that when the strap is placed around a package and the end 5 drawn taut the end section 6 will tightly grip the end 7"ofl the strap 7, interposed between the same and the bar 2 of the buckle-frame.
In some instances the gripping edge of the bar 2 and the end section d may be semicircular or outwardly curved, as shown in Figs. I and 6, and said edge may be constructed in various ways to more readily adapt it for use upon different varieties of straps, such as woven-fabric straps, or in connection with any preferred strap, and I therefore reserve the right to form said gripping edge in any way I deem most desirable in practice. It will also be\understood that 'when using this' construction of buckle-frame the end section 6 of the member 3 will be correspondingly curved, as shown in Fig. 5. The side bars a and b near the end section c are preferably upwardly directed to form a grip whereby the end section c may be readily grasped and the frame 1 moved forward, thus moving the bar 2 away from the end section 6', freeing the end 7 of the strap, so that :it may be readily removed from the buckle. The end section c also serves the purpose .of a retaining-loop for the extreme free end of the strap, and it will be readily observed that by having the side bars al and at one end upwardly directed the strap may be readily inserted under the end section c Without loosening the grip upon the strap. It will be noticed in Fig. 8 that the free end 7 of the strap extends below the bar C.
In Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown a form of buckle the parts of which are slightly different from the buckles shown in the previous views in that the member 3 is placed on the under side of the frame and the cross-bar 2 of the main frame is placed near the upwardlydirected end of said frame. In order to hold the member 3 upon the buckle-frame, I provide the upwardly-directed tongues 1l, which are formed by severing the cross-bar 6 longitudinally and dividing one of said severed por- IOO construction of buckle the en d 5 of the strap is secured to the bar 2 of the main frame of the buckle, while the free end 7 thereof is inserted between the bar 6 and end section 6 of the movable member 3, so that when said buckle is placed in operative position upon a bundle, &c., the end 7 will be gripped by the end member d ot' the main buckle-frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a buckle, a body portion lcomprising' the side bars a and b, end sections c andd and a cross-bar 2, a portion of said side bars being upwardly directed to forni a grip whereby said body portion may be readily grasped and moved longitudinally, in combination with a frame 3 movably mounted on said body portion, comprising side bars e and f and end bars 6 and 6, flanges formed integral with the side bars e and f and adapted to be bent over the side bars c and b holding said member 3 on the body 1, and a strap, one end of which is secured to one of the members of the buckle and the other free end thereof secured by the coaction of the `body l and member 3, as set forth.
2. In a buckle, a body portion l comprising side bars a and b, end sections c and 0l and a cross-bar 2, the gripping edge of the bar 2 and the end section d being outwardly curved, in combination with a movable member 3 comprising the side bars e and f and end sections 6 and 6', the end section 6 also being outwardly curved to coact with the gripping edge of the cross-bar 2 and a strap, one end of which is secured to one of the buckle members and the opposite end designed to be inserted between the bar Q and the end section 6 whereby, when the strap is drawn taut around an object, it will be securely held by the coaction of said body l and member 3, as set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROYL A. BROWN.
