TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed May 8, 1905. Serial No. 259,402.
To n/Z 1.1;??,0711/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. NEwELL, a
'citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification, containing a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in tables; and it consists of the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
The obj ect of my invention is to construct a table composed of a central section, a basesection, and a top section, all arranged to be securely fastened together and also to be readily and easily taken apart that the same may be shipped in a compact condition.
A further object of my invention is to provide an upper section with a slotted collar, whereby the same is held to the center post and the lower portion of the center post provided with inwardly-projecting lugs, whereby the said post is supported to the base-section.
In thedrawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation with a portion of the lower part broken away, showing my complete device. Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view of the base-section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the under side of the bracket of the upper section. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1 and viewing the same in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the post or center section. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the upper portion of the center section and bracket.
In the construction of the device as shown I provide a base 7, composed of a boss 8, and formed integral therewith are arms 9, preferably three in number. The upper portion of the boss 8 is provided with a projection 10, having two inwardly-projecting lugs 1 1, provided with bolt-holes 12. Upon the boss 8 is supported the center section or post 13, the lower end of which is provided with a ilange 14, which is to come in contact with and iit over the projection 10 ofthe boss 8. The center section 13 is provided with two inwardly-projectinv lugs 15, which come in alinement with the lugs 11, and in said lugs are located bolts 16, said bolts 16 projecting downwardly at a length sufficient to pass through the openings 12 in the lugs 11, and on the ends of said bolts are placed nuts, whereby the said base and center section are `in the slots 28.
securelyfbolted together. The upper end of the center section 13 is provided with boltholes 17, through which bolts 18 and 19 are passed and arranged one to pass over the other at' right angles, the purpose of which will be fully hereinafter described. The post 13 is also provided with integral brackets 20, on which is placed the shelf 21. Upon the upper end of the center post 13 is located the top section 22, which consists of a collar 23, having cast integral therewith four arms 24 and 25,
the arms 24 being of greater length than 4the arms 25, the purpose of which is to prevent the table-top 26 from warping or breaking, the under arms being placed at right angles to the grain of the wood of the table-top,thus permitting a short section of the table-top to project beyond said arms 24. The collar 23 is provided with fourslots 27 and 28, the slots 27 being of greater depth than the slots 28 and are so arranged as to be passed over the bolts 18 and 19, the bolts 18 passing within the slots 27 and the bolts 19 passing with- When the said section is placed upon the top of the post 13, the nuts of the bolts 18 and 19 are applied and securely fastened, thus locking said section iirmly upon the post 13. The arms 24 and 25 of the upper section are reinforced by webs 29, and to these webs are held, by means of stove-bolts 30, the partition-walls 31 of the shelf 21.
A table of this construction is specially designed for saloon, restaurant, steamship, and other localities where it is desired at times to remove the tables by disconnecting the parts, and the said table is also conveniently shipped and readily placed together by any inexperienced person.
1. A table of the class described, comprising a base having integral arms and boss, a center section mounted upon the base-section, an upper section having integral arms mounted upon the top of the center section and held thereto by bolts, one crossing over the other, a shelf formed on the center sec- IOO tion, partitions located between the shelf and upper section said partitions being connected to the arms of the upper section, substantially as specified.
.. 2. A table of the class described, compris- IIO said sections held together by bolts passin through said lugs, an upper section provide with a slotted collar located on the top of the post, bolts passed through the upper end of the post at ri htanfrles to each other and passino' throng the snlots formed in the collar of the upper section for retaining said upper section upon the top of the center post, a plurality of arms forming a part of the upper section, integral lugs formed on the center post for supporting a shelf, substantiallyT as specified.
3. A table of the class described, comprising three members, each arranged to be detachably connected to the other, a center section and base provided with lugs whereby JAMES L. N EWELL.
