UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
WILLIAM HETTERSOHIED, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
KNOCKDOWN BASE AND COLUMN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,834, dated October 2, 1894.
Application filed December 26, 1893. Serial No. 494.681- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HETTER- SCHIED, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Bases and Columns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved knockdown base and column, and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional plan of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2 5 and Fig. 4 a detail of the band G. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of the central portion of Fig. 2, with the band G omitted.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents a vertically adj ustable shaft, upon which may be supported any suitable top, table, or drawing-board, or any convenient instrument, thing, or device whatever may be supported thereon, that occasion may require. Said shaft islocated in the axis of the truncated, conical, hollow column B; the upper part of which column has one or more longitudinal slots B dividing its upper end, and said divided portion is surrounded with a band 0, provided with a binding screw D, whereby said shaft A may be clamped and held by tightening said screw, and released for vertical adjustment by slacking the same. The base sections consist of separate diverging feet E, the inner portions of which form a divided truncated cone inclosing the lower part B of thecolumn B. Each seam of said cone is covered by a band, or rib F, attached to one of the cone sections and overlapping the adjacent edge of the next section. A band G serves to secure said base sections in place and is forced downward and tightened upon the same by means of upwardly projecting inclined planes or wedges H, on the upper surface of said band, which engage the lower ends of the upper portions of said ribs, which ribs are removed where the band encircles the said cone, the upper portions of said ribs thus forming external projections,
or lugs on each cone section to engage said inclined planes on-the band.
To permit the band Gto pass over the ribs F recesses G are provided through which said ribs pass as the band is lowered to place. The lower end B" of the column is reduced forming a shoulder 13' against which the upper ends of the base sections abut to support the column. Lugs I are also provided to engage openings in the column, but these are not deemed necessary when the shoulder B is provided.
It will be observed that by this construction a symmetrical structure may be made and that by slackingthe screw D, the band C can be removed, and by turning the band G with the recesses G opposite the ribs F, said band may also be removed when the base column and shaft will readily separate for packing or otherpurpose and that the various parts may be again set up or restored to place very readily, and the various parts of base and column may be firmly secured in place. 1
What I claim is- 1. In combination with a column, havinga central lower portion, a base having diverging feet and a divided truncated conical middle portion, surrounding said lower portion of the column and having external projections, and a band having inclined planes to engage said projections, and recesses to pass over the same, substantially as described. 2. In a knock-down base and column, a truncated, conical column having an annular shoulder, a base having diverging feet and a divided truncated conical middle portion engaging said shoulder, and ribs overlapping its seams, and a band having inclined planes engaging said ribs and recesses to pass said ribs, substantially as described[ In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
