Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BRODERICK HASKELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telegraph- Poles and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic poles for telegraphs, signal masts or the like, and the same has to do particularly with a type of such poles which comprises a series of preferably three uprights or legs of various cross sections, the same being secured in proper spaced relation by a series of specially constructed transverse bands or hoops fixedly, while at the same time removably engaged therewith, at suitable intervals in the length of such uprights or legs, and similar to the pole described in my Patent No. 835,280, dated November 6, 1906, of which the present invention is an improvement.
The objects of my invention are first, to produce a metal pole of the collapsible or knockdown type wherein the separate parts may be transported and the pole formed by assembling the parts at the place of installation, or taken down if so desired; second, to construct a pole which is light in weight and easily handled, is increased in rigidity, and has a minimum cost of manufacture and setting up, while at the same time maintaining the durability of the pole; third, to so arrange the parts of the pole that for general application the use of a base may be dispensed with, and the pole may be secured directly in a concrete foundation.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear from the detailed disclosure hereinafter to be given.
The invention consists of structural characteristics and relative arrangement of the elements which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts in the several figures of the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation showing a general view of a telegraph or like pole constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the clips forming the corners of the'bands engaging the uprights or legs of the pole; Fig. 3 is a section on line III-ITI of Fig. 2, with bolt removed; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the form of clip shown in Fig. 2 with a filler block and leg, L-shaped in cross section, in positron; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the filler block shown in Fig. 4:; Fig. 6 is a plan view of a corner clip and filler block, when uprights of U-shaped cross section are employed; Fig. 7 is a similar view when uprights of V-shape are used; and Fig. 8 is a view similar to that of Fig. 4: showing the arrangement of clip and filler block when the pole is square in section and four uprights are employed.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, of the drawings, 1, 1, represent a series of uprights or legs, not less than, and preferably three to each pole, which legs are so assembled and secured by the bands or hoops 2, as toconverge toward the top, as is usual in this type of pole. Said legs or uprights 1, 1, are made of angle or channel bars of plate material and rolled into the different cross sections by the mills. The bands or hoops 2, 2, are composed of a series, usually three, of clips 3, 3, preferably of malleable iron arranged at the corners of the pole whose inner surfaces conform to the outer surface or angle, depending on the cross section of the uprights or legs 1, 1, as shown in the different Figs. *1, 6, 7 and 8. The clips 3 are provided at their ends and on the outer sides with sockets Or recesses 4:, preferably rectangular in shape, to receive the correspondingly shaped ends of the spacing or cross bars 5, extending between and connecting the clips 3 of the bands 2. On the ends and opposite sides of the clips 3 from that of the sockets 1, are provided upper and lower lugs 6, 6, projecting inwardly of the pole, as shown.
A properly shaped filler block 7 is seated within the angle of each of the uprights or legs 1, 1, and is provided with separate upper and lower projections 8, 8, so arranged and proportioned as to engage the corresponding upper and lower lugs 6, 6, of the clips 3. Bolts 9, suitably curved, and passing through holes 10 in the socket sections a of the clips 3, and between the upper and lower projections 8, 8, of the block 7, firmly clamp the clips 3 and blocks 7 of the band 2, and the uprights 1 together, combining the different elements comprising the pole, into one structure.
In order to make the clamping action of the bolts 9 most efficient and. insure that the bands 2 will always remain in position with respect to the uprights 1, the radius r of clips 3 is slightly shorter than the radius r of the filling blocks 7, so that the lugs 6 will force the filling blocks against both sections of the upright or leg when the bolt 9 is tightened up, as lugs 6 are forced over the projections 8 on filling block 7 In addition to this arrangement, the clips 3 are so formed and cast that there is a greater angle or opening between the inner ends of the lugs 6 when not in use, as when clamped in position as illustrated, so that when the bolt 9 is tightened it will draw or force the lugs 6 on clip 3 over the ends of projections 8 of the filler block 7, thus tending to clamp'the upright 1 between the block 7 and clip 8. The bolt 9 also draws clip 3 against the outside face of the upright and clamps the upright against the filler block 7. It will be readily seen that the construction herein described causes a clamping action in all directions and when the outer ends of clip 3 are forced in place by the bolt 9, they strike the inner corners or edges of the projections 8, which act as fulcrums and upon further tightening of the bolt 9 will force the inner face or surface of the clip 3 against the outer surface of the upright 1.
By passing the bolt 9 between the upper and lower projections 8 of the block 7 said block is prevented from sliding downwardly and out of engagement with the bolt 9 and lugs 6, 3, of the clip 3.
While in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, I have shown the invention as applied to a pole constructed of three uprights of L-shaped cross section, said uprights may be of other cross section, and I have shown in Fig. 6 an arrangement wherein uprights 1 of U- shaped cross section are used; whereas in Fig. 7 uprights 1 of V-shaped cross section are employed. In Fig. 8 is illustrated an arrangement for utilizing four uprights 1, which are L-shaped in cross section, when it is desired to make a square or rectangular column.
In the forms of the invention shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the clips 3, filler blocks 7,
and bolts 9, of the form described with ref.
erence to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, are so modi fied in shape as to adapt them to the various cross sections and numbers of the uprights used, and it is not thought necessary to de scribe further in detail the modifications, other than the foregoing explanation. It will also be seen that in providing the sockets or recesses 41: in the ends of the clips 8, for the reception of the ends of the spacing bars 5, a single bolt 9 is capable of securing said bars to a clip which at the same time is capable of performing the function of securely clamping the upright 1 between the clip 3 and block 7.
From the foregoing disclosure it will be seen that the pole made according to my invention is easily and quickly assembled or taken down, and consists of a minimum number of parts, while being most rigid and light in construction.
lVhat I claim is l. .A- pole comprising a plurality of separated upright channel bars having their channels facing toward the center of the pole, filler blocks adapted to fit within and conform to the channel of each of the bars and provided with a projectionat each of their ends andextending beyond the inner edges of the upright bars, clips engaging the outer surfaces of the upright bars and provided with an inwardly projecting lug at each of their ends adapted to engage the corresponding projection of the filler blocks, a bolt passing through the ends of each of the clips and forcing said projections and lugs against each other and clamping said bars between the blocks and clips, and means for connecting the adjacent ends of the several clips.
2. A pole comprising a plurality of separated upright channel bars having their channels facing toward the center of the pole, filler blocks adapted to fit within and conform to the channel of each of the bars and provided with a projection at each of their ends and extending beyond the inner edges of the upright bars, clips engaging the outer surfaces of the upright bars and provided with an inwardly projecting lug at each of their ends adapted to engage the corresponding projection at the end of the filler blocks, a bolt passing through the ends of each of the-clips and below the projec-' tions of each of the blocks, and means for.

3. A pole comprising a plurality of separated upright channel bars having their channels facing toward the center of the pole, filler blocks adapted to 'fitwithin and conform to the channel of each of the bars and provided with a beveled projection at each of their ends and extending beyond the inner edges of the upright bars, clips engaging the outer surfaces of the upright bars and provided with an inwardly projecting beveled lug at each of their ends adapted to engage the bevel of the corresponding projection of the filler blocks, a curved bolt passing through the ends of each of the clips and below the projections of each of the blocks, and means for connecting the adjacent ends of the several clips.
4. A pole comprising a plurality of separated upright channel bars having their channels facing toward the center of the pole, filler blocks adapted to fit within and conform to the channel of each of the bars and provided with separated upper and lower projections at each of their ends and entending beyond the inner edges of the upright bars, clips engaging the outer surfaces of the upright bars and provided with separated upper and lower inwardly projecting lugs at each of their ends adapted to engage the corresponding projections of the filler blocks, a bolt passing through the ends of each of the clips and between the upper and lower projections of each of the blocks, and means for connecting the adjacent ends of the several clips.
5. A pole comprising a plurality of separated upright channel bars having their channels facing toward the center of the pole, filler blocks adapted to fit within and conform to the channel of each of the bars and provided with separated upper and lower projections having beveled outer sides at each of their ends and extending beyond the inner edges of the upright bars, clips engaging the outer surfaces of the upright bars and provided with separated upper and lower inwardly projecting lugs having beveled inner sides at each of their ends adapted to engage the corresponding beveled outer sides of the projections of the filler blocks, a bolt passing through the ends of each of the clips and between the upper and lower projections of each of the blocks, and means for connecting the adjacent ends of the several clips.
6. A pole comprising a plurality of separated upright channel bars having their channels facing toward the center of the pole, filler blocks adapted to fit within and conform to the channel of each of the bars and provided with separated upper and lower beveled projectionsat each of their ends and extending beyond the inner edges of the upright bars, clips engaging the outer surfaces of the upright bars and provided with separated upper and lower inwardly projecting lugs with inclined surfaces at each of their ends adapted to engage the beveled surface of the projections of the filler blocks, means connecting the ends ofthe clips, a bolt passing through the ends of each of the clips and engaging the projections of each of the blocks.
7. A metallic pole comprising three separated upright channel bars having their channels facing toward the center of the pole, filler blocks adapted to fit within and conform to the channel of each of the bars and extending beyond the inner edges of the upright bars, separate and independent clips engaging the outer surfaces of the upright bars and provided with means adapted to engage the outer ends of the filler blocks, spacing bars connecting the ends of the adjacent clips, and a curved bolt passing through the ends of each of the clips and bearing against the outer side of each of the blocks.
8. A metallic pole comprising separated upright channel bars having their channels facing toward the center of the pole, filler blocks adapted to fit within and conform to the channel of each of the bars and extending beyond the inner edges of the upright bars, separate and independent clips engaging the outer surfaces of the upright bars and provided with means adapted to engage the outer ends of the filler blocks, means for connecting the ends of adj acent clips, and a bolt passing through the ends of each of the clips and against the outer side of each of the blocks.
