Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1905.
Application filed Apri115, 1905. Serial No. 255.859.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. BENTON, a resident of Stoughton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Last- Thimbles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in last-thimbles, the object ofthe invention being to provide improved means for securing the bottom disk of the thimble to the body thereof, which means permits the body of the thimble to remain of the same diameter throughout and dispenses with the necessity of any internal lugs or other internal means for securing the bottom in place, and my improved thimble is of simple and inexpensive construetion.
With this object in view the invention consiste in certain novel features of construction and combinationsand arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in section, showing my improved thimble in a last. Fig. 2 is a view of the thimble, and Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line a: as of Fig. 2. n y
l represents my improved thimble, and 2 the last to receive the same. The body ofthe thimble is formed by bending heavy sheet metal into cylindrical form, which formation leaves a longitudinal groove or recess, as shown at 3, and said body portion is provided with outwardly-projecting lugs to prevent withdrawal of the thimble from the last.
4 represents the disk bottom of the thimble, which is secured in place by my improved cap 5. This cap 5 is preferably of thin sheet metal pressed tightly over the thimble end disk 4 and around the end of the body portion of the thimble and tightly clamped, and that portion of the cap over the groove 3 is forced into the groove. The cap may be brazed to the body of the thimble or secured in any other manner, and the cap may be of any desired metal or other material of sufcient strength to secure the bottom to the body portion.'
By this construction of thimble nothing inside the body is required to hold the bottom, nor is it necessary to contract the lower end of the body, all of which is very undesirable, as it interferes with the removal of the tool orresults in injury thereto or to the thimble and last.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A last-thimble, comprising a cylindrical body open at both ends, a separate disk bottom thereagainst, and a cap embracing the disk and clamped about the body to secure the disk thereon.
2. A last-thimble comprising' atubular body having a longitudinal groove, a disk at one end of the tubular body, and a cap embracing the end of the tubular body and said disk, and a projection on said cap entering the groove in the tubular body.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS E. BENTON.
