Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
T 0 all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN S. WEAVER and JOSEPH B. WEAVER, citizens of the United States, and residents of New Oxford, in the county of Adams and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Trough, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention is an improvement in troughs such as are generally used for feeding and watering stock, and has in view a trough such that the ends may be easily applied to and detached from the body and form watertight connections therewith, whereby the parts when disassembled can be closely packed, convenient for shipment and stowage. To this end we preferably provide the ends of the trough with inwardly-projecting curved flanges which receive the opposite ends of the trough body and are firmly pressed or clamped thereto by bowed members arranged inside of the body over the respective flanges and compressed at opposite ends, a gasket being inserted at the joint thus made, to insure a water-tight connection.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. i
Figure l is a perspective view of a trough constructed in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view substantially on the line 9,-2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 8 is a cross-section of the trough through the body thereof.
The trough is essentially composed of three primary parts, which are the body 5 and the ends 6, 6, the latter being constructed with supporting feet 7, and inwardly-projecting flange S, lthe said flanges having a form and size corresponding to that of the body 5, thus making the flange of each end consist of' an approximately semi-circular bottom portieri and a straight top portion. 0n the curved portions of the flanges 8 of the ends of the trough are seated the opposite ends of the body 5, and placed over these flanges within the body, and of like form,
are bowed members 9, preferably semi-circular in cross-section, with the ends of each terminating near the under face of the straight top flange. Each member 9 is compressed at the ends by set-screws l0 threaded through the straight top flange, thus forcing the body of the trough toward the bottom curved flanges.
In order that the joint made between the body of the trough and each end may be water-tight, we provide in connection therewith a gasket ll which is preferably interposed between the curved flanges and body, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and The lateral outward pressure of the bowed members at their upper portions, as well as that of the body 5, may be augmented b y making the members and body of slightly greater width across the top than the inside diameter of the curved flange, before the parts of the trough are assembled. ln this way when the trough is set up, both 'the body and the members 9 will tend to spread out toward the curved flanges and thus make the joint tight at the top. A trough thus constructed may be readily set up and dismounted, in which latter condition it is adapted to be packed within a relatively small space convenient for shipment or storage.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. The combination of trough ends having inwardly-projecting curved flanges, a trough body having its opposite ends conforming to said flanges and seated thereon, bowed mc1nbers arranged inside of the trough body over the flanges, said trough ends having portions arranged over the ends of the bowed members, and set-screws threaded into said poi tions and bearing on the ends of the bowed members.
2. The combination of trough ends having supporting feet and provided with inwardlyprojecting flanges, the flange of each lend having a curved lower portion and a straight upper portion, a trough body having its opposite ends seated on the flanges of the ends and conforming thereto, bowed memhers arranged Within the body over the names to this speocaton in the presence of curved portions of the flanges of the trough two subscribing Witnesses. ends, and set-'screws threaded through the JOHN SEBASTIAN VEAVER. straight portion of the ange of each trough JOSEPH BERNARD VEAVER. 5 end and bearing on the ends of the adjacent Witnesses:
bowed member. ELLEN M. STRALEY, In testimony whereof We have signed our W. A. WAGENER.
